A few days ago, the left-wing activist group MoveOn.org began sending out emails seeking contributions to fund primary challenges against any Democratic senator who does not fully support "health care reform with a public option." Now there's an update: MoveOn executive director Justin Ruben says the group has raised $3,578,117 for the project and is thinking of new ways to punish errant Democratic lawmakers.

"It's a huge sum, and the clearest signal yet that any Democrat who helps Republicans filibuster health care reform will face an enormous backlash from the grassroots," writes Ruben. And now, working in conjunction with Howard Dean's old organization Democracy for America, MoveOn is starting a drive to take away the committee chairmanships of any Democrat who fails to live up to MoveOn's progressive standards. "Many of these senators hold coveted committee chairmanships that give them significant power within the Senate," Ruben writes. "Our friends at Democracy for America have launched an open letter urging Senate Democrats to strip committee chairmanships from any Democrat who filibusters health care." Ruben says that more than 66,000 MoveOn and Democracy for America members have pledged to contribute.

Toe the Leftist Line or they're coming after you. It sounds like a lot of whining from the Left, but three years after capturing Congress, and a year after their common enemy left the White House, the Dem's infighting over Socialist goals may be a good sign for the GOP next year.

Blue Dogs are faced with either appeasing the hard core Socialists or having to face primary challenges from well heeled Liberals. The Purists on the Left have little tolerance for Blue Dogs who wish to maintain a "moderate" persona.

The Revolution Will not be Televised

Democrats squabbling is hardly newsworthy. Over the last 30 years or so, the Democrats tend toward chaos and infighting while the GOP has (until the last few years) been good at keeping its constituents/politicians in lockstep.

For the socialism/conspiracy crowd who think that Obama is a fascist socialist commie pinko hippie left wing iron-fisted, milquetoast dictator and appeaser, it's a good sign. You don't tend to see a lot of public infighting when a political party has authoritarian aspirations. The Blue Dogs have thus far managed to evade the gulags and concentration camps, somehow.

Why, it seems like just the other day that an old poster here was breathlessly warning us all that, if we were so foolish as to elect the Kenyan, white citizens in general would be rounded up and put in special camps.

I keep waiting for that knock on my door....

Until the power of corporations to lobby congress is curtailed, movements like MoveOn will be vital to letting people still have a voice in government.

I'll give you that. History shows dictators always clean up their houses before they start on the general population.

I thought bush already did that.

I wouldn't call three and a quarter million a monsterous sum. Sure, it's a fair amount, but it's a drop in the bucket if you spread it out amongst every blue dog. Besides, if they push too hard against the blue dogs in the primaries they might wind up handing their seats to the republicans, particularly if they don't restrain the character assassination.
