Ron Paul draws Three Tea Party Primary Opponents

“The Tea Parties have awakened a lot of everyday people here and across America. And Ron Paul is worried about getting swept up in the anti-incumbent wave as if he is some exception.” — Tim Graney, one of Paul's primary opponents¹
Go figure, Ron Paul will have to fend off three Tea Party primary opponents! Oh my, the humanity! The humanity!

Quote:
Excerpted from “Even GOP conservative Ron Paul draws Tea Party opposition” By By TOM BENNING, The Dallas Morning News, 12:00 AM CST on Sunday, February 7, 2010
Even anti-government icon Ron Paul can't escape the conservative "Tea Party" fervor stretching across the county.

Paul, the Gulf Coast congressman whose 2008 presidential run excited libertarians nationwide, even though he didn't get much traction overall, is considered by many to be the "father of the Tea Parties." But he has three opponents in the March Republican primary – more than he has faced in his past six primary campaigns combined.

All three have ties to the anti-tax Tea Party movement. And while Paul remains the odds-on favorite to win re-election in his district, the crowded primary highlights the potential conflict between Tea Party activists and a GOP hoping to ride their wave to electoral success this fall. …

Wasn't Ron Paul like the original Tea Partier? Now Tea Party candidates are attacking him! It's like the French Revolution where the radicals guillotine the royals and then the ultra radicals guillotine the radicals.

The libertarian veneer is coming right off the teaparty movement.

well yeah its kinda like that, except Ron Paul ain't going anywhere. People in his district LOVE him. NO matter what a few fringe radicals in an otherwise fairly normal grassroots movement think.

Re: Ron Paul draws Three Tea Party Primary Opponents

Although Ron Paul makes some sense on government intrusion and/or economics, he is a thorn in the flesh and is essentially the equivalent to Dennis Kucinich.

This isn't surprising at all. The Tea Party movement was quickly co-opted by conservative Republicans, proving that there is nothing in American politics that can't be subsumed by the powers-that-be when it proves expedient.

I always found it wildly inaccurate when the Ron Paul movement was labeled "populist". He's always been firmly grounded in principle. The Tea Party movement has become what Ron Paul's campaign was so often accused of being - namely populist demagoguery for ignorant rednecks. It's no shocker to see them opposing him.

Re: Ron Paul draws Three Tea Party Primary Opponents

Ron Paul will demolish any teabagger opponent.

He spends a LOT of time meeting one-on-one with folks in his district. He says he has to since a lot of his votes ultimately go against what might provide immediate relief in his district (i.e. he votes against farm subsidies - because in the larger scheme that is better for everyone including farmers, although in the short term that hurts the farmers in his district).

Its my position that Teabaggers are about 3% Libertarian, and 97% ignorant/stupid. Ron Paul can probably take credit for being the figurehead for the 3% libertarian aspect to them.

I have no problem with ANY politician being challenged. I just think its funny that the teabaggers would challenge one of the few incumbents who actually is closer to their stated foundation than any other incumbents are ... but it makes sense since teabaggers are 97% ignorant/stupid. On the other hand there's only about 3% overlap with Ron Paul so I guess if they manage to drive him out and a bunch of other incumbents they'll be replacing 3% good incumbents and 97% stupid incumbents with almost an exact replica.

Ironically I also agree he is the equivalent to Dennis Kucinich although their platforms differ mightily, they both are politicians with integrity which is damn near non-existent among the other members of congress.

I don't think it was ever a full veneer, just a few paint flecks of libertarian color every so often.

And I thought I couldn't hold the current Teabagger movement with more contempt.
