I do business with both government agencies and non-profits. In fact about 40% of our revenue comes from these two revenue streams.
I can't help at times to feel like I am accepting "dirty" money...that I am a part of the entire corrupt system of non-profits and government.
What is the system?
Simple...
Senators and congressional officials have two primary functions:
1) Enact laws.
2) Spend taxpayer dollars.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which one of these two provides the most power and influence...therefore what most of them will spend their time doing.
And non-profit agencies provides a very convenient and quick avenue to spend money. Regardless of the fact that no one, not even the government itself, wastes as much money as many non-profits...boat loads of money.
When it comes to election time - Elected officials want to brag and prop themselves up about how much money they have spent on various things. And exactly where that money is spent - is non-profits. Regardless also to the fact that study after study has exposed these agencies to unbelievable waste and fraud...so bad that it is not uncommon that as little as 25% of the money actually ends up helping the cause.
Soon I will have non-profits rushing to our doors to spend money. These agencies scramble to get rid of cash like it is a disease. Purposely overspending, and buying higher cost products whenever possible. They MUST get rid of the money before year end or they lose it.
Not to mention that the salaries of most non-profit administrators is based on how much money they attract and spend.
Now, before anyone post anecdotal examples of a non profit they know of that dosen't do this - keep in mind I do business with 100's of agencies.
You are the one person in this world who will live according to the choices you make. Live life like there is a tomorrow.

The Military is much the same. My unit was given X amount per year. Most of the year we would only buy just what we needed. Then close to the end we would spend like drunken sailors and then some. All in an effort to get more money the next year.
