    Conservatives, which do you prefer?

With another Tea Party primary victory putting another safe GOP seat in play, I have to ask: do conservatives want the Republican party to win majorities, even if that means nominating useless idiots like Trey Grayson, Lisa Murkowski, and Sue Lowden, or is it better to get principled conservatives in office, even if that means falling just short of a majority?

My view is that I'd rather have an effective GOP minority, especially given the way our system works, than a GOP majority like the kind we had from 2001-2006, led by a corrupt establishment that jacked up spending by 60% over 6 years, passed a new entitlement, and undid the Clinton/Gingrich ag subsidy reforms in the heat of an election campaign.

We can trust Miller, Angle, and Paul. I'd take even just one of those over three sure victories by Republicans that can't be trusted to do the right thing.

What say the rest of you? Because this question is actually important. We have a real shot of taking back the majority in the Senate in 2010, but it probably won't happen because of the situations in Florida, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Nevada, and Alaska. We'd need to win all five of those races to win the Senate. With Crist, Specter, Grayson, Lowden, and Murkowski, that probably would have happened. With Rubio, Toomey, Paul, Angle, and Miller, winning three would be an accomplishment and winning 4 would be amazing. Winning all 5 seems like a longshot.

I'm going to actually agree with this. Genuine, real principled Republicans would probably do what is best for the country, instead of simply saying "lower taxes,.....brainnnsss...." like the zombies we have now.

It would also enable Obama to actually DEAL with Congress. Right now he has this slim majority and a bunch of Democratic turncoats who realize they can hold the balance of power since the Republican minority can be relied upon to always vote no. They realize this givest them great power, and are using it to get premiums for their districts which willl guarantee them reelection.

I think I would prefer fiscal conservatives who realize the insane spending has to stop. All that's saving us right now are some Democrats who care about the country and the people in it. Sometimes people forget that not all Democrats are the left-wing fanatics. I would like to see a new caucus in Congress of moderate Republicans and Democrats.

Re: Conservatives, which do you prefer?

I don't know about moderate Republicans. Moderate Democrats tend to be fiscal hawks. Their moderation generally is on social issues and spending. Republican moderates on the other hand tend to define moderation as favoring tax cuts, but also favoring spending, which is just an insane position. Charlie crist exemplifies the worst of this. His criticism of the health care bill was that he liked all the new spending, but hated all the taxes and spending cuts.

So the logical endpoint of Crist's position is that he would have voted to blow a $1 trillion hole in the deficit.

I thought we were done with the Republicans. What short memories we have.

The former are idealists acting from highest motives for the greatest good of the greatest number. The latter are surly curmudgeons, suspicious and lacking in altruism. But they are more comfortable neighbors than the other sort." -- Robert E. Heinlein

Not sure what else to do. All of the viable libertarians like the Pauls just run as Republicans, so the best approach for libertarians is to get libertarians to run in and win Republican primaries.

It's like watching a tag team wrestling match, where our nation is the loser every time.

Re: Conservatives, which do you prefer?

the problem with any political insurgency is it will inevitably be seen as leaning one way or another as in dem vs. rep. etc.....being a moderate means what exactly?

take some comments here so far; if tea party advocates get in and go along with tax cuts they are just rep./cons, if they get in and avoid or go along wiht social issues ala gay marriage, stem cell research etc. they are social democrats....

what is a real 'third party' party?

I personally feel that the majority of the country isn't so much tripped up by these issues, they want clarity, a plan and some honesty.

I have said this before and will make this example- as a con. fiscal and social I would still, realizing that I cannot have it all, trade a socially relaxed view but a more stringent fiscal one. Issues have to be prioritized, right now who really gives a shit if gay marriage goes forward, I am tired of wasting breath and energy on it, I want a plan to get us out of the fiscal binds we are in.

BUT if I then follow that up by saying keep the bush tax cuts and lower the corporate tax rate from 35% to say 25% I am a greedy rep/con.....and so it goes.

How much is it worth to the world to keep the USA functioning ?

What would a total USA collapse do to the world economy ?

What kind of trade off could be made ?

We will recover in any event, it's just that many will not live long enough.

Republicans have nothing to offer. Democrats are at least working on the problem. Those who have been "trickled on" will vote for a party ("tho far from perfect") that by numbers they feel part of.

God so loved the poor he made them a majority.

"Democrats are at least working on the problem."

Sure. Unfortunately, they're working on making it worse.

Until both parties understand basic math, things will continue to get worse. We simply cannot continue to spend more than we have. It's unsustainable.

The Tea party is still a protest group, not a mature political party. They have a clear idea of what the government is not suppose to do, but not what it is.

But any movement that gets the GOP to stop acting like democrats is step in the right direction.

    This.

The Republicans are only marginally better than having Democrats in power. It's like the difference between bleeding to death from a major artery severed or bleeding to death by a number of cuts.

You're still dead in the end. In a way I'd like to see the Democrats keep power so the end can come more swiftly, then those of us able to rebuild out of the ruins will do so.
