I'd like to hear from our conservatives that support Newt and also have been so vocal about getting the illegals out of the country.
Newt Gingrich
Gingrich argued to extend the basic protections of citizenship to the families of otherwise law-abiding illegal immigrants.
"I don't see how the party that says it's the party of the family, is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families that have been here a quarter century," the former House Speaker said. "And I'm prepared to take the heat for saying 'let's be humane and enforce the law without giving them citizenship but by finding a way to create legality so they are not separate from their families."
Is this the same as calling for Amnesty?

Green card, red card, blue card, yellow card....whatever card he wishes to give them amounts to amnesty. Kill the anchor baby crap and that will eliminate many illegals because they won't have as much incentive to breed like rabbits once they get here. (You wouldn't believe the number of children under the age of six whose parents are illegal that has popped up in my town since they all came here after Katrina.) Also, Newt needs to realize that amnesty does nothing but encourage more to come here because if they're here long enough, some other crazy politician will come along and grant them amnesty, too and frankly, I tired of my tax dollars going to these people.

Let's put the anchor babies aside for now.
I'd like to hear from the people on this forum that have been so vocal about the illegals in the past but have also supported Newt in the last week or so.
Does this change your mind on your support of Newt?
"let's be humane and enforce the law without giving them citizenship but by finding a way to create legality so they are not separate from their families."
How do you reconcile that statement to fit your beliefs about illegals and still support Newt?

What are you talking about?

I'm not really inclined to vote for Gingrich (though I like the spunk he adds to debates...), but I agree with him on this issue. If a family has been peacefully living here for decades and includes a mix of immigrants and native-born citizens, I fail to see the merits of splitting them up through deportation. Putting aside the human anguish, splitting families just pushes those who remain into poverty and makes them more dependent on the government; it also increases the likelihood of the younger generation moving toward crime. Combine that with the costs of deportation and the potential legal battles as the families fight to prevent it, and I suspect that the government would end up spending much more money than if they had just left all these families alone.
We should focus our immigration enforcement efforts on criminals and those who have just arrived. So long as those elements remain an issue, it seems like poor priorities and a waste of time to bother harassing peaceful, established families. Deporting a half of a family that's been here 25 years strikes me as similar to the TSA singling out an 80 year old grandma for a special anti-terrorism search. It seems like, in both cases, there are better uses for our resources than that.
And WRT to amending the Constitution to remove citizenship jus soli, I think that's pretty much a non-starter and only serves to delay and distract from the debate. Without even discussing the merits or demerits of such a change, there simply isn't the political will to do it (either in Congress or in 3/4ths of the states) and, even if there were, it would likely take years to actually go through the process.
"He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
Micah 6:8
What I don't understand is, that the discussion focueses so much on the immigrants.
It would be more efficent and easier to tackle the problem by punishing americans who violate the law by employing illegal immigrants. I think the maximum fine for doing that is 500.000 € ($700.000) here.
It's much more civilized to single out those who break the law because they don't want to pay american workers. If the price of that are higher prices, that something else...
"So called 'energy-experts' claim that the switch to renewable energy sources would take a very long time and that it would 'not be profitable'.
But there is no objective denomination of "not being profitable". One must always ask not profitable for who?"
-- Hermann Scheer

Newt is just as much a flip-flopper as Romney, Perry and Cain. You won't get anyone in here who supports Newt because they don't want to have to answer for Newt's hypocritical philosophies. The guy doesn't deserve to be the next president and history proves that. This is just another nail in his coffin as far as I'm concerned.
