It's a matter of what you think is important. All things being equal, I'd trust the guy who released more years than the guy who minimally complied with the law. In 2008, that would have made more of a difference than it does now.
Now, in 2012, the race is between out of touch competent rich guy vs. out of touch incompetent political class rich guy. What is in Romney's tax returns does nothing to change that narrative. If he releases them, you just find out that yeah, he's rich, and yeah, he shields his income. What do you learn that you didn't know about Romney already?

There's another theory. That his tax returns don't contain anything embarrassing, but he has other skeletons in other places and he doesn't want to establish that he'll jump whenever Obama tells him to. He releases his tax returns, then Obama's team asks, "What about his Mormon Church records?"

Romney is winning independents handily. If he starts slipping over the tax return issue, then he'll flip flop and release them.

I listen to what you would consider Liberal radio.
They're actually Independents because they are very freely critical of Obama.
They usually remark that both candidates are aware of our misery but Mitt seems to out of touch.
My personal crowd is very involved with the political process and most are what I call Nationalist Republicans.
You would call them Marxists.
