    Since Reagan.
The idea behind LIfeLine was that you can't get a job if you don't have a phone, you need the phone to set up interviews, and to receive calls from the prospective employer.
It was expanded to cell phones, which makes sense, and now it's undergoing closer scrutiny and the cost is dropping.
It's still a good idea, and it's weak points are being addressed. I don't think Obama made this his focus, or even spent any time on it. You may want to blame him, and I like the way try to shift it, like when Bush was president it was Pelosi and Reid, but now with Boehner it's all Obama.
It's been around for 29 years...

I blame them all. Boehner could cancel this program by just refusing to fund it. The House controls the purse strings. Every good idea turns bad as soon as the government starts to fund it with someone else's money.

Re: US Phone Program Cost 2.2Billion

My bitch isn't that people who don't have phones need one, those that needed one got one. I can buy into that to some extent. It should be the cheapest phone available, no smart or premium phones allowed, and it should be the cheapest plan available, bulk discounting should be applied (and probably is).

My bitch is that, once again, a government managed program, as well intentioned as it is, was miss-managed, went over budget, and those who are not entitled got benefits, and wasted tax payer monies. Seems so much so a recurring story with government managed programs.
If a man were behind four months on his mortgage and was talking to you about his plans to build an addition on his home you would think him daft and delusional. But in Washington, ignoring a current crisis to discuss grand dreams is called “boldness” and “vision.”

Just how many job calls do you suppose those phones get used for?
