Mary Winkler Found Guilty of Voluntary Manslaughter

SELMER, Tenn. (AP) - Mary Winkler, wife of former Baton Rouge preacher Matthew Winkler, has been convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of her husband.

The 33-year-old mother of three -- who could have gotten a first degree conviction -- testified that she had been abused physically and sexually by her husband Matthew. She also testified that the shotgun went off accidentally when he was shot in the back in March of last year.

Voluntary manslaughter suggests the crime was committed in an irrational state. Winkler will be sentenced to only three to six years in prison, and she could be released on parole after serving less than one-third of that time.

The judge will sentence her at a later hearing. Winkler will be free on bond until the sentencing date.

Yes, the justice system favours the wealthy. The sun also rises in the east and sets in the west; Arizona has lots of cacti; Scotland is full of Scottish people.

Sorry to sound cynical and jaded (which I am) but you're right. On the other hand though it seems to me from a very quick look at the facts as reported that this woman has had a reasonable decision on this. The sentencing process will be interesting.

Did she express remorse over her husbands death? if not, did she have the bruises or psychological indications supporting her claims of abuse?
Maybe these things were discovered during trial. Perhaps she was abused. She could have done other things which is why I think she may have gotten time.
