Thieves Target Victims At Indianapolis Gas Station

Fri Apr 20, 5:17 PM ET

Thieves are targeting people who have left their keys in the car as they pump gas at a station on Indianapolis' southwest side.

Investigators said thieves have stolen at least two cars and have taken items from others within the past week at the Shell gas station at Interstate 465 and Kentucky Avenue, 6News' Cheryl Jackson reported.

The thieves were captured on good quality surveillance video and police are trying to determine who the people are based on those shots.

Bob Key, the owner of the Shell station, said the same person was involved in three of the thefts.

Last Saturday, a man who left his Jeep running as he went into the station had his car stolen.

"We've never ever experienced anything quite like this," Key said. "I don't remember this particular individual doing this before here."

On Monday afternoon, the owner of a truck left the keys inside. The thief strolled up and laughed as he jumped inside. Police found the truck a few hours later, vandalized beyond repair.

The thieves are also getting inside unlocked cars, even if the keys are not inside, to steal anything they can get their hands on.

In one case, a man and an apparent accomplice took a laptop computer. Police said a woman, who was with the man, pulled up to a pump and peeked over at the unlocked car.

The man jumped inside, talked with the woman and took the computer. After the theft, they jumped into a van and left.

Re: Thieves Target Victims At Indianapolis Gas Station

The man LEFT his Jeep and went into the station, and the robbery occured then.

On Monday, some guy LEFT the keys in his car INSIDE them, and likely walked away (though this isn't mentioned), and the vandalism occured then.

In BOTH the instances, the victims did not know that the robbery/vandalism was taking place, and thus couldn't prevent it.

Thus, this has got ZILCH to do with guns. You could keep all the guns in the world in your car, but if you leave your car open and stroll away, thieves may well steal/rob/vandalize. Duh!

Performance tip: lock your car. Don't leave your keys in the car.

Problem solved.

Um...
Unless people are walking around with a loaded gun IN their hands, ready to fire at all times, guns have nothing to do with this.

No Thanks - I don't want America to become like some Isreali towns where people go shopping carrying AK-47's with them.

I think Steveo's point re guns was that if there had even been a Chance that the criminals would get shot, they'd be much more hesitant to pull this crap. Not sure if he's right, but he's not so obviously wrong as some posters seem to think.

In the situations he mentioned, the guys left the car and went into the gas station. They coul dhave had a freaking bazooka in their car for all I care, and the thieves would still have made off with it.

And you will go to prison.

In Florida, you may not ever use deadly force to stop a theft of property from an unoccupied vehicle.

Just point a gun at the thief will get you a three year MANDATORY prison term.

Please learn something about the law before you talk such idiocy.

Matt

I suggest that you re-read your state laws so you don't end up in jail. If you need help understanding them, maybe this site will help you:

Re: Thieves Target Victims At Indianapolis Gas Station

Well there was a clerk at 7-11 store a guy was trying to rob the store and the clerk got a shotgun underneath the counter and aimed at the robber shot him and then police arrested the robber but tghe clerk was not arrested. See in Maryland the police would charge em both. But in florida the clerk was not charged.

Maryland is in the process of reforming their laws which would put them very much in line with those of Florida.
