American wanted for child abuse finally caught

Well, I'm surprised no-one's posted this as yet ... An American wanted in the US for child abuse was living openly in China for a while now, and has finally been arrested in HK a week or so ago (after chinese police tipped HK police off about the guy's flight to HK).

American fugitive wanted in abuse case lived openly in China

ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

SUZHOU, China -- An American fugitive accused of raping his daughter and posting videos of the abuse on the Internet lived openly in China, even enjoying visits from his new wife and registering at a local fitness club under his own name.

U.S. court documents show that Kenneth John Freeman's wife, Maleka May, visited him in China more than once during his time as a fugitive. May, who reportedly married him nine months before he was charged and is believed to have posted the bail that allowed him to flee, was detained in San Francisco on Thursday as she got off a plane from China.

Information provided Saturday by the Powerhouse Gym also provided some clues about the months Freeman lived in the eastern Chinese city of Suzhou.

Freeman, one of America's 15 most wanted men, was captured Tuesday after more than a year on the run while trying to enter Hong Kong from China using his own passport.

(rest can be read at the URL provided)
Now, this is obviously great news.

However, the US and China do not have an extradition treaty which delayed this guy's arrest for a long time.

Should they have one? It would mean reciprocal treatment on BOTH sides, which means the US would have to also extradite those the Chinese considered criminals ... which I'm not sure would happen.

Your thoughts?

He was also denouncing the U.S.A. while he was over there - I saw this on a report awhile back.
More than anything this is why the Chinese gov't welcomed him. (IMO)

The Chinese government would welcome YOU to work there too. They did not welcome him because he denounced the US. Sorry, but that's just NOT true - if in fact they hated the US so much, they wouldn't even have tipped the HK police off as they did (which eventually lead to the guy's capture).

It's these type of comments which foster distrust between people of both the mentioned nations.

What are your thoughts on my question regarding the extradition treaty? I think that is the salient question ...

As long as BOTH parties are fair about it, and stick to the agreement, then I'm certianly for extradition myself.

ah ... There is the problem right there. The US would likely consider what China considers criminals to be political dissidents, and this is why there isn't any extradition treaty in the first place.

I believe though that the US should respect China's extradition requests if there were to be a treaty, and vice versa. In fact, looking at it from an American point of view, I can't see how it would hurt the US.
