Re: Dad Burns Baby In Microwave

Since there seems to be little point to this thread other than to report the gruesome actions of a twisted individual, and follow up with a contest to see who can dream up the most painful sort of retribution, let me pose a question:

Do you guys believe that the purpose of the American justice system should be vengeance or that it should be attempting to prevent the commission of future/potential crimes?

More along the second part. I think that the purpose A.J.S. is to punish rule breakers.

I believe it should be used for punishment; "vengeance" if you will...

Anyone else see the irony in the US trying to bring democracy to Iraq, while Americans are calling for ancient Iraqi 'eye for an eye' laws here?

Do you think that should trump the consideration of preventing crime? That is to say, if we have a scenario where you have to choose between, say, cutting off the nuts of a child molester with a dull, rusty band saw and preventing the molestation of a child, which would you choose?

It wasn't irrational IMO......Some crimes should have punishment that actual fit the crime.

It should be used in the prevention of future crimes....But certain crimes such as this (and many others) are slowly becoming more popular, therefore I can only assume that our current practices aren't deterrent enough.

The link below has the statistics on child abuse and even the government acknowledges that the data doesn't touch the actual number of cases.

Child Abuse and Neglect Statistics

Something must be done, and locking these sickos up for 5 - 10 years isn't the answer.....The amount of repeat offenders is proof of that.

I actually like the "eye for an eye" law.
How many times do we turn on the news just to hear about crap such as this?
IMO the current system is failing to protect the innocent.

IMO, start using that rusty saw and child molestation will drop.

I agree. The only way you can make someone truly understand what they've done is by doing it to them. The idea that noone deserves the death penalty is just plain stupid. Yes, everyone has the right to live. But when you do something like this, you forfeit that right. Cruel and unusual punishment ftw

That guys a retard. If you dont want the baby put it up for adoption. The microwave is the stupidest idea I can think of... Jesus Christ if you have to kill it at least do it painlessly. I can't get over how stupid an idea that is... a frikking microwave. He should be brought back to life and killed again for coming up with such a dumbass idea . And eww... think of that mess...

As a father of a wonderful, beautiful newborn baby boy, I just cannot express in words how these kinds of heinous actions are possible by a human being... it sickens me to no end.

As a believer in the Lord, I know in my heart of hearts that this evil son of a bitch will get his due in this world or the next. People who are quick to say, "uh, what about love and forgiveness?" -- some people are beyond redemption and this one seems like a good candidate if ever there was one.

I think that's flawed, simply because it suggests that the two must be connected. I don't think that's true. There's actually not a need for either to trump the other.

In the scenario you provide, of course I would prevent the molestation of a child.

I don't believe we'll ever see a time, though, where the only way to prevent something like that is to allow someone who's already committed the act off the hook...

Why can't it be both? Hell, vengeful punishment could also serve to prevent future crimes. If I was a child rapist, and I saw another child rapist be killed by some giant guy torturing and raping him to death, I'd think twice before cruising the streets of neighborhoods and offering candy and car rides again.

Let me ask you something. Do you believe that these sorts of horrific crimes are becoming more "popular" or do you believe that their reporting and legal follow up is becoming more thorough? That is to say, I'm willing to be that 100 years ago, you could smother a baby if you didn't want it, and everyone concerned would have been willing to categorize the baby's demise as "Sudden Infant Death". In this day and age, with strides in forensics and what-not, "disposing" of an unwanted family member is much more difficult and raises many more questions.

The same is true in many aspects of society. For example, do you think that there was really a sudden and unprecedented explosion in the molestation of children by "abstinent" Catholic priests, or do you think that it was probably always swept under the rug until recently?
