The simple fact of the matter is, prison brutality exists, that's a fact. Does the fact that it exists bother me? It does to a certain degree. Am I going to weep for a serial rapist who then gets raped himself while doing time? Honest answer is there are other people who'd get my sympathy before that guy.
Of course! I'm completely with you in this sentiment. If a serial predator gets his comeuppance, I'll do you one better - I'll probably smile. The difference for me is that I don't think it should be encouraged, in any way. As a matter of fact, I think that more should be done - I don't think DA's should be leaning on charged suspects with the threat of "prison justice". That shouldn't exist at all. However, if it does happen, I won't lose any sleep.

Quote:
Do I think that prison brutality acts as a deterrent? Not 100%, but I don't think that the number is 0%. I mean let's be honest, if everyone who went to prison just did their time in their own cell, with 3 square meals a day, a roof over their head and no danger of physical or mental harm, prison wouldn't seem like such a daunting prospect. The fact that "inside" there are a whole different set of rules (and the violence which is inherent in a hierarchical prison system) is definitely a consideration / deterrent, which is the "silver lining" if there is one to prison violence. You aren't going to get rid of it, so if it serves a purpose, so be it.
You raise an interesting point here. The nature of locking bad people up together inherently creates a hostile environment. If prison is going to be the threat for breaking the law, prison should be unpleasant (though personally, I think not getting laid for years on end and not having the freedom to pop down to the pub for a pint would torture me . There's an interesting debate that rages, at large in our society, as to how "pleasant" to make prison. The human rights advocates say that as long as people are alive, they should be fed, allowed to exercise, allowed to interact with others, etc. But at what point does humane treatment cease to make it much of a punishment/deterrent.

I'll have to think on this, actually

Re: Dad Burns Baby In Microwave

Having read the pages that have come onto this thread in the past day, I'll have to make my point again. Why are people so concerned with revenge(or even punishment). If someone is a threat to society, they should be made to not be a threat. Preferably by rehabilitation, but execution works when people aren't likely to be rehabilitated. The guy in question is obviously dangerous and unstable. He should receive a nice meal, a meeting with a priest, and a bullet. Treat him well when you do it. There's no reason to make the man's last moments painful, you just need to make them his last moments.

In a general sense, I agree with your sentiment. Preventing further transgressions is paramount - the manner of prevention is not.

Indeed. Murder is not illegal so that people won't murder, but so that we have a method with which to remove murderers from society.

People who go out of their way to do sick things should be punished in sick ways. He could have just painlessly smothered it or something, but instead he put it in a microwave. Rehab is a good idea for most criminals, but if someone does something sick like this, rehab is a waste of time. If he puts his own kid in a microwave, his punishment should be being burned to death somehow (since actually building a giant microwave really would be going too far.)

Oh, I wasn't saying rehabilitation was the way to go with this one. A bullet in the back of the head would be my solution. Quick and cheap.

That method is quite efficient and probably less painful than electrocution and lethal injection.

I know this is wrong, but microwaved babymeat makes me hungry for boneless buffalo wings.

In and of itself that sentence is not as black/white as it seems, however it should be priority #1, and be the center of all laws and judicial rulings.

Including taking precedent over the rehabilitation of the perpetrator.

Re: Dad Burns Baby In Microwave

i like to see people get what they deserve. it makes me feel good. i wonder how families of victims feel...ohhhhh man can you immagine.. the thread in here' horrific crimes'' you know personally id like to have a trial determaining guilt. then on extreme highcrimes id like to let the victims families jury style decide the punishment and they can impliment it any way they like.
