Indian lawyers tie man to tree, beat him

LUCKNOW (Reuters) - Lawyers tied a young man to a tree and beat him outside a court in India for refusing to marry one of their relatives, an official said on Wednesday.

They rounded on the victim when he arrived at a court in the Taj Mahal town of Agra to settle a dispute over marrying the niece of one of the lawyers.

Indian TV channels showed the abusive lawyers tearing off the man's shirt, tying him to a tree trunk and cutting bald patches into his hair. The 22-year-old victim was then beaten up.

Local official K. Chandramauli said he ordered police to file a case against the lawyers. The Agra Bar Association said it was investigating the attack.

Now why cant we Tie criminals to a tree and beat them? Seems to me this is good justice instead of jail time. Cause Jail is waste of tax payer money.

Because we're like... civilized?

Or at least some of us are.

Were we civilized back in the old west? Seems to me a lot of innocent people were hanged back in those days.

So if you ever commit a crime, or are suspected of having committed one, your OK with being tied to a tree and beaten?

Let's see. How about the Sixth and Eighth Amendments?

You know, that pesky ol' Constitution......

Re: Indian lawyers tie man to tree, beat him

Stevox reminded me of this book I just read.

It's called "The No Asshole Rule: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn't" by Robert I. Sutton.

Sutton cites an intriguing study conducted in 1996 at the University of Michigan, in which the behavior patterns of southern and northern Americans were contrasted:

"Subjects (half southerners and half northerners) passed a stooge who 'accidentally' bumped into him and swore at him. There were big differences between how the northerners and southerners reacted: 65% of the northerners were amused by the bump and insult, and only 35% got angry; only 15% of the insulted southerners were amused, and 85% got angry. Not only that, a second study showed that southerners had strong physiological reactions to being bumped, especially substantial increases in cortisol (a hormone associated with high levels of stress and anxiety), as well as some signs of increased testosterone levels. Yet northerners showed no signs of physiological reaction to the bump and insult." (p 117)

Since he's from "Way Way Down South" that probably explains his posts.
