Good timing for tuition costs.

Exactly.

But I suspect that neither you nor I, had we a daughter with an issue like that, would have let her waste her time and mental energies on the internet either.

Like I've been saying, we can hope that this teaches people something.

That woman would be more appropriately placed in a mental hospital than in a prison.

And so, for that matter, would her victim. That girl was a prime candidate for a psych ward. Where were her parents, and why didn't they notice her depressive state?

That's what this is really about.

Being a parent.

An attentive parent that knows about their kid and his or her issues fer chrissakes.

Both sets of these so called parents set some pretty poor examples.

Rather then see this as a criminal case, the parents should be sueing the other family for contributing to their daughter's death. That would make far more sense.

Here in Japan, bullying now is a crime in schools, and some parents are sueing over incidents of it.

The only difference with this case is that it happened over the internet. Yes, it's sad and tragic. But I don't believe it's criminal...
Exactly. The only thing that might be illegal here is if the neighbor violated MySpace terms of service, but I don't see how that would warrant 20 years imprisonment.

Someone should tell them that bad press can be prevented by not abusing prisoners in the first place. Censorship is only needed to preserve the good reputation of those who have tortured and/or murdered already.

Maybe she should have known, and done, better, but that is not for the law to force people to be nice to others.

She didn't cause shit. The girl decided to hang herself. The neighbor didn't hold a gun to her head. If I call you a mean name, and you hang yourself, am I a murderer?

Please.

Right.

And its a somewhat sad commentary on our society that we see here most of us blaming the victim and/or the victims PARENTS rather than the vicious busy body who decided to get involved in teenage disputes over the internet.

What she did, was obviously a direct cause of what happened. What she really had no business DOING.
What directly caused the girl to die was her decision and action of hanging herself.

With todays judges and courts there's no telling what that will be. She may get the 2008 humanitarian award.

McDonald's would surely go out of business if this argument is accepted.

Is that really successful ?

Bullying in schools is a crime ?

Who gets to define exactly what "bullying" IS ?

The problem I see with his argument is that the girl accepted the online communications, knowing that with human interaction there is an inherent risk of rejection and bad feelings. I would bet that McDonald's food also contributes to deaths by contributing to heart disease, but McD's doesn't shove their food down people's throats since the people accept the risks of eating the food when they eat it. Ultimately, many of the things everyone does contribute to their deaths. Now if someone kidnapped the girl and tortured her or if McD's began kidnapping people and force-feeding their food, there might be an argument.

There is nobody to blame in this child's death but the child herself. She chose suicide, nobody and I mean NOBODY chose it for her.
