Actually, not so much. At that age, my parents had treated me almost like an adult for a few years which, in turn, inspired a respect for them. I didn't always agree with them or heed their advice (sometimes to my detriment), but I never thought they knew nothing. I believe this is generally a rational response to parents trying to maintain "Because I said so" rules for far too long. Kids think their parents are stupid at this age because of equal parts (1) children lacking foresight and wisdom and (2) parents creating arbitrary and irrational rules because they're struggling to let go. Since (2) wasn't in the picture, (1) was a little less in the picture, and I never had this issue with my parents.

Well, I don't know that the movie (if there was one made) about bonnie and clyde was marketed to kids and teenagers. Like video games tend to be. The majority of the adult population has little or no interest in playing video games.

The main subject matter here is a supposedly civil society allowing children to be exposed to and engaging in violent fantasy video games. As I was saying earlier, our society decided to "rate" the contents of movies so that parents could easily judge if the movies were appropriate for their kids to see. Video games are "rated" as well. So parents are allowed to make poor choices on this matter too. They obviously do. As we see in the story.

It's more about what seems to be becoming more and more common in American society today. Parents making very poor choices in their child rearing methodologies. This isn't something that's new though. We just hear about these kinds of incidents more quickly because of the advances in communications over the recent decades.

Which is why I said:

As odd as it sounds, it sounds like you and I would have very similar parenting styles. Sounds like we were raised by nearly the same people too. My wife and I have some pretty major disagreements about a few things. I think she's being ridiculously uptight about some things and SHE thinks they're just "inappropriate." She get thundering pissed about some really silly shit IMO. She's gonna give herself a heart-attack over something most of us wouldn't even worry about.

Gramma (my mom) will walk from her bedroom to the bathroom nude sometimes. My wife nearly hits the roof any time she hears of it from the boys (they're 2 and 4) or happens to see it. I tell her to settle down it's not really a big deal or dangerous to them. Shit, my parents took me and my cousins to nude beaches when we were kids (it was the early 70's). So we saw naked people. So what ? At that age we were clueless and had no concept of "hot women" or what "naughty parts" were for or we might have gotten into trouble. I don't recall even SEEING any attractive women. But I wasn't really LOOKING either. Because I had no clue.

Anyways sorry, but what you say brings these disagreements my wife and I have to the front of my mind. I think she's going to have a very difficult time "untethering" these boys as they grow. I guess I will try to keep things in some kind of acceptable balance

We have a rating system for games, too. I know I used to work at Walmart in electronics. Its called Entertainment Software Rating Board. I can't tell you the number of times I witnessed parents buying video games rated above the age of the child. One of my favorites was when a parent bought a copy of Manhunt 2(Wii Version) for his 10-12 year old. When parents abrogate responsibility then problems arise.

My sentiments exactly.It is a load of crap to blame a game for one's actions.When I was teenager I played Mortal Kombat series, Doom and a whole bunch of other violent video game as well as millions of other teenagers by yet we did not have millions of teenagers committing crimes inspired from the games we played.And I am pretty sure these teenagers are not the only ones playing GTA4,there are probably millions of other teens playing these games but yet they are not out committing armed robbery or any other crimes.


I do believe the parents should show judgment in getting games for their children.Most parents with common sense would not go the store and buy their kids porn and booze.So the same kind of common sense should apply to video games,music,books and many other things with ratings,warnings and etc on them.

Could be that the officer or reporter is trying to create a story.

GTA has been out for years. For their to exist a valid sociological phenomenon of video games as a major source of violence than we should be witnessing thousands of such acts by now given the prevalence of these games on the market.

Yet we don't.....just like society saw no such thing with heavy metal music or any moral decline because of Elvis.
