Steve, it's exactly on topic. Napster, like a gun, is a TOOL, (only a far, FAR more useful one). Metallica's arguments against it are almost precisely the same as anti gun arguments. You strongly support unfettered gun ownership despite the fact thousands die annually, but are willing to throttle the Internet because a bunch of pathetic old men without the good grace to retire when they ran out of inspiration still want to fully exploit their equally pathetic followers too stoned to realize the eighties are over.

Or were, like I said, hasn't this been resolved pretty much already? Napster is now a perfectly legal file sharing service and Metallica remain four aging douchebags.

Metallica figured out the formula, and they went for it. They make more money in a day than you’ll make in a lifetime, and that angers you; I get it. Their fans, stoned or not, are still out there in droves, buying their CD’s and concert tickets.

I deal with it all the time with my photography. People steal photos and throw them up on their MySpace or Facebook pages without my permission. I've had about a half dozen people kicked off of MySpace and one kicked off of Facebook.

My lawyer loves shit like that...

No, I don't spend all day going through Facebook. But when someone copies one of my photos, the data goes with it, which includes my name. A Google search of my name yields results.

And nobody's stealing photos of 70's bands. Hell, those guys pay for the photos. The shots that get stolen are of local bands that I shoot at various venues around town. These guys believe they are, somehow, entitled to the photos, and they're not. They can get them for a fee if they want. If they don't want to be shot, then it's incumbent upon them to tell the venue not to permit photography during their set.

And my work may not be "immortal", but it's pretty fuckin' good. My bank account attests to that...

Well, OK, then what IS the difference between you and the guys who camp out around Linsey Lohan, except that, basically, the only people who WANT the pictures you take are the guys you take them of?

And don't most venues forbid cameras as a matter of routine?

Well, for one, I don't "camp out" in front of anyone's house. I could do that, I suppose, but it really doesn't interest me. I'm also not interested in chasing the star-du-jour around Santa Monica or Hollywood on a weekend. Sure, the money can be damn good, but you've gotta' get that money shot and hope that nobody else did. There's also the ever-present possibility of being attacked.

And if the only people who want my photos are the people who are actually in the photos, that's completely cool with me. Fact is, though, that I've sold photos of various performers to third parties, as well...

Pretty much any of the larger venues, yes. House Of Blues, for instance, is outright militant about "no cameras". I shoot not only for myself, but two magazines, so that's when I get credentialed and get into the photo pit.

Smaller venues don't care. They might question what's in my backpack when I shoot in a new venue, but I've shot so often in most of the clubs in southern California that I know all the doormen. It's gotten to the point where they don't even charge me a cover...
