Dunno, they reached a settlement behind doors. Doesn't change the fact that they sued in the first place and also compiled a list of users and demanded they were permanently banned from Napster (which they were).

No one is demanding that Metallica do or not do anything. We're just pointing out that in relation to the crap they've done in the past, it's going to take a lot more than this for them to get any sort of praise from a lot of people. If this thread were simply about the girl, then it would be very different. But it's not, it's about Metallica donating $50k to the cause. That's all well and good, but the guys sue people regularly for much much much more than that and probably have a net worth approaching some billions of dollars.

Plus, ten days after she vanished. Ten days. I could understand three or four to make sure the girl was actually gone, but ten days?

I did so because of the ridiculous attacks against the band, and what they donated (when they had no responsibility to do so), when one has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

Just wanted to point that out.

You're dismissed...

Thank you for excusing me. I'll go now while you continue to argue the merits of the band, while berating people for arguing the merits of the band. Have fun!!

Did I give you some indication that I cared about teaching you a lesson?

It would be fun, though, to see the family denouonce those who denounced the generous actions of the band, though.

So what?

The people who were banned were illegally downloading and sharing the music. Agree with Metallica or not, they have a right to protect what’s theirs, and they have a right to be paid for its’ use…

What dollar amount would you assign to “respect”? How much would it take. You already admit that you haven’t a clue just how much money they have, so how much would it take, that they could actually donate, for them to gain respect from you?

Quote:

Agreed.

But who was the first person bitching about “only” $50 grand donated by the band?

Quote:

A cause for which they have no obligation or responsibility; absolutely none…

“Probably”? Is that what we’re going to base out positions on now? “Probably”??

By God, you’re right. I can’t believe Hetfield and Ulrich weren’t leading the search teams the very next day.

It’s not like these guys don’t have other responsibilities. Should they have hung around until the Sheriff said “Uh, yep; she gone”?

Right, now what were you saying about that girl who's missing? Oh that's right, nothing.

If Milli Vanilli donated $50k, I'd hardly turn around and say they were stand up guys.

As for them being douchebags, why do you hold that opinion?
Much the same reason I hate the RIAA and their heavy handed approach to squashing file sharing technology. Granted, it was Metallica's lawyer who made the comments that he wanted to utterly destroy Napster, but I think guilt by association is applicable in this situation. I understand that you're against the idea of illegal file sharing, and most artists are with you. However, Napster was used for a lot more than sharing illegal music. Much of the music was very much legal and much of that free music was posted by rather well known artists. Those artists took advantage of the service and ended up profiting immensely from it due to having to spend less money on advertising and distribution. Metallica took the opposite approach and immediately launched $10 million plus lawsuits against Napster, three colleges (places that need that money to teach students) and 20 specific users and also managed to ban hundreds of thousands of Napster users on the suspicion that they may have downloaded a Metallica song at some point.

I would probably have less of an issue with this today, where there are plenty of online venues for smaller artists to freely distribute their work. However, back then, Napster was about it and the actions of Metallica came off as a big middle finger to thousands of artists who were just trying to get their music heard (using the same exact method Metallica did when they started out).

no link but I heard on the radio that the guitarist/singer called the father of the girl the other day offering the money.

I was never was a fan but I have to give them a big hat tip for this.

I fear that there will not be a happy ending to this story.

They have the money now since they completely fucked all music fans by putting pressure on congress to hammer down on Napster.

I used to love Metallica until Lars had to be a greedy little bitch.

Honestly, it sounds as though you'd prefer that Metallica had contributed nothing, just so you'd have more to complain about...

Well, this is where we'll just have to disagree.

I have no problem with someone deciding to give their work away for free. I think it's stupid for them to do it, but it's their choice. Likewise, I also have no problem with someone going to the nth degree to protect that which is rightfully theirs. You, on the other hand, seem to think that their work should be available to anyone who wants it, and it should be available for free.

If colleges "need that money to teach students", then perhaps they should've ensured that websites which allowed illegal file sharing couldn't be accessed. They failed to do that and, in failing to do so, allowed illegal activities to occur on their campuses.

They share culpability...

Just because Metallica used the same exact method is neither here nor there. It's their music; they can change the rules when it comes to the distribution of it. If there were thousands of artists who were using the same technology, I'm gonna' bet that Napster could've survived without allowing the file sharing of Metallica's music. Napster didn't do that, though, and they rightfully took it in the ass for having poor judgement...

I work hard.

I like to get paid as much as possible for the work I do.

I would think that you'd like to get paid as much as possible for the work you do, wouldn't you?

Why shouldn't Lars Ulrich get paid as much as possible for the work he does?
