Probably me, for one in this case. I believe that accidents are just that and not a reason to go after a big pay day.
I've ridden motorcycles for over 40 years and have had people attempt to kill me, both accidentally and in at least 2 cases, on purpose. Back 15 years ago, I was 2 blocks from the house, on the way to the hardware store, when a woman in a minivan turned left dead in front of me.
I had a choice of hitting her van at an angle, or the front of a parked truck on the side of the road. I chose the glancing blow to the minivan. I ended up on my back in the middle of the street. Keeping still with my eyes closed, I took inventory of my injuries. I could wiggle my toes and fingers and most everything seemed as though it was still connected. All the while, the woman who hit me was standing over me screaming. I got to the point where I was looking for what hurt and my right hand came to mind. I opened my eyes and brought my hand to where I could see it. All 4 fingers were dislocated and the tendons were torn loose.
It was a year before I could pick up a coffee cup in that hand.
While I was recovering from operations, I needed a copy of the police report for my records. Mind you, I had chalked it up as an accident and only wanted to be reimbursed for medical costs. I got the report and in it, the officer reported that the woman claimed to have been blinded by the sun.
The accident occurred at about 9 AM in mid October in Norwalk Connecticut. She had been heading northwest at the time. Anyone with any sense, knows that the sun would have been fairly high in the Southwest at the time and could not have been a factor. I sued her ass and put a hefty down payment on a house.
She was wrong AND lied to get out of it. She should have been punished.

Interesting! I guess it's too late now, but if the original post had given the name of the kid as maybe the grandson of Newt Gingrich, I do believe some of our liberal friends would have responded differently.

Anyone who plays golf has seen how sports technology enables weekend duffers to launch 300 yard drives down the fairway. The same technology allows teenage boys to whistle line drives at frightening velocity. Once I went to a baseball clinic where a major league manager was speaking. He observed that everyone is afraid of the ball. He told the story how some members of the local football team stopped by practice, and when these 300 lb linemen stepped into the batting cage the first thing they would say was, "you better not hit me with that ball." Even conservatives are averse to getting hit.

I've been involved in 13 vehicular accidents, spent time in the hospital, missed work, spent numerous weeks in physical therapy, spent time going back and forth to the doctor, etc. and out of those 13 accidents, I sued only once. (I should point out that all but one of those accidents were the fault of the other driver.) The ONLY reason I sued for the last accident I was in was because they didn't want to reimburse my medical insurance company for what they had paid for treatment of my daughter and me. Yes, I ended with with a tidy sum afterwards but after spending almost a year in physical therapy, I deserved it.
The reason I never sued in the past is that my medical bills were paid, I was voluntarily compensated for time missed at work and my car was either repaired or replaced (two of them were totaled). Could I have gotten more money? Of course, but I'm not greedy and an accident is an accident.

I've been in 3. One, I hit a deer that was running in the direction of the car (no eyes to be seen) that then turned right in front of my car. Two, a drunk rear-ended my car when I was stopped at a red stoplight. Three, an old geezer ran a stop sign and plowed into me ... I was in a long line of cars traveling down a through street.

I've AVOIDED probably 25 accidents because I have significantly faster reaction time and forethought than 99% of the drivers out there.

I never had to sue because:
The deer was dead. I should have loaded the body up for free meat.
The drunk guy was probably in serious trouble for DUI.
The old geezer yelled at ME for causing the accident even though a greyhound bus-driver saw the whole thing and agreed I was completely in the right and the old man was completely in the wrong. The cops apparently saw it as the old man's fault as well. The next year the city put a stoplight up at that intersection. I could have sued him, but who feels the need to sue an old geezer who was just taking his wife home from the bingo parlor?

And that right there is is the difference between you and him.

My son was cut on his face during an emergency c-sect which left permanent scaring. Did I sue? No. I thanked God that out of everything that could have gone wrong, I have a healthy son with 10 fingers and 10 toes.

Some people look for nothing more than free money. That is all that matters to them. It's the entitlement mentality. "Me me me.... you owe me!! Gimme gimme gimme. And NO I am NOT going to work for it."

I honestly believe that some people just sit and wait to sue someone so that they can have their payday.

I could’ve easily respected a decision to sue to keep aluminum bats off the field. To me, that would seem like the proper way to go about it. By taking a pay out, the parents are proving that they don’t really give a fuck about the aluminum bats. The bat manufacturers aren’t going to stop producing the bats because of one kid who, tragic as it was, was killed by a ball that was hit by their bat. Why won’t they? Because millions of other baseball players in this country will continue to buy them, and will continue to use them without incident. The benefit to the company, by not having the bats outlawed, will far outweigh the pay out of $850,000.00 to the parents of a dead kid. That’s why an appeal in this case in unlikely.

Now, if the parents had waged a campaign to rid youth baseball of aluminum bats, and sued to have them removed from the field of youth baseball, that would’ve hit the manufacturer far more severely, as aluminum bats make up a mountain of revenue for them. But, because the two people who could’ve run the most effective campaign to ban them opted for a token amount of money (frankly, my kid is worth more than $850 large to me), the manufacturer is sitting pretty.

And, if there is a death in the future, which is attributable to an aluminum bat, these parents will share some of the blame for that death. They could’ve worked to ban them. They could’ve presented a pretty compelling case to keep them off the field, and they didn’t…
