If your really that naive, I fear you won't have to worry about that association for very long.

Accidents do happen, you know. It doesn't mean it's always someone's fault. It definitely doesn't mean that you should be able to extract money from someone only tangentially involved. Awarding damages against someone for making a product that could possibly be dangerous because an accident occurred is a horrible precedent. It's like suing a car maker because someone died in a car wreck in a perfectly serviceable car. It's not the car makers fault. Cars are dangerous, its your responsibility to be careful with them. They didn't force you to drive, they didn't skimp on the safety precautions.

Hell, why not sue the idiot coach who turned kids loose with this horribly dangerous bat, or sue the parents of the kid who was swinging the bat? Because they're contractually protected, so these people took a shot at the only people who weren't protected, because someone had to pay, dammit. I feel for the people, but they need to grow up and realize that sometimes the universe just isn't fair.

C'mon , it was just $850,000..........all you parents will easily absorb that on the next LS bats you purchase for your sons/daughters.

I don't believe in sports for children anyway. When I was growing up my father kept us too tired from working at chores around the house and farm to do sports of any kind and I was stronger than just about any kid I knew. Whenever we wanted to play he'd tell us to mow the back field, then play both of us a simultaneous game of chess as a reward. We never won.

And people should pay for "accidents" they're responsible for. What the FUCK, do ALL conservatives work for big corps that are selling us unsafe products??

Yes, some things are dangerous, but do you have to make them more so? Hell, we could make the bats out of steel and put blades on the baseballs, shit, why not just play with live hand grenades, betcha that would make it lively.

It's. A. Fucking. Stupid. GAME. If a Little League team can't afford the difference between aluminum and wooden bats they shouldn't be playing baseball in the first place.

Sports are pretty important, as well. They teach coordination, team building, and general fitness. Working hard, like your father had you do, is great too. That just doesn't negate the benefits of what you can get from sports, as well. One huge advantage is that, if you are good enough, it can pay for your college. There are many benefits to sports as well as just plain hard work.

A pathetic (yet unsurprisingly lame) attempt to inject politics where no reason to do so exists...

By and large, aluminum baseball bats are more expensive that wood bats.

I don't want to see that get in the way of your pointless rant, though...

And by, "by and large" you mean almost 100% always more expensive. Unless you get the crappiest aluminum bat you can find and the most expensive woode bat.

You see, John Drake most kids aren't very strong. They simply haven't developed fully. Aluminum bats are used because they are much, much, lighter than wooden bats. With an appropriate sized wooden bat kids would hardly be able to hit the ball properly.

this hit was from a ball ? you could never tell from the choppy OP.

it remains stupid and doomed on appeal.

Really? And the fact that the parents decided to turn their son's death into a pay day at the expense of a party that was not at fault (and that they knew was not at fault) does not? How can you possibly justify their actions or condemn those who defend the bat company?

Never.

First quote in the OP (second line):

Brandon Patch was killed in 2003 when he was struck in the head by a baseball that had been hit by a Louisville Slugger aluminum bat.

Nope. Never.

I much prefer having my son alive to having $850,000.
I doubt that it's not allowed just because of the risk. I would imagine it has a lot to do with keeping the records/statistics comparable since they traditionally only used wooden bats. They're not going to give marathon runners jetpacks just because they're available, are they? And, the parents didn't know what? You don't need to know about major league rules regarding the bats to figure out that it's dangerous to get hit in the head with a hard, massive object flying at great speed. I'd probably be too embarrassed to bring up such a stupid lawsuit, but I guess personal integrity has a price and it only took $850,000 (maybe less) to get them to turn their kid's death into a pay day.

Most aluminum, bats are less than wooden bats. Yes there are expensive ones but relatively few are sold as not that many kids get good enough to need one.

The main reason for non-wooden bats was longevity. Wood bats break and need frequent replacement which puts a strain on volunteer run teams not to mention parents on a budget. Weight in kids bats are little different.

Its not like baseball/softball only became doable for little kids since alum bats.
