Da Vinci Code. That book was so contrived, and Dan Brown couldn't even be bothered to nail down anything resembling historical accuracy. It's like reading the stuff I used to write in the fifth grade.

Re: What's the worst book you've ever finished?

The worst book that I've ever read is The Bible. It's loaded with contradictory messages and promotes aesops that are downright evil. To be fair though I don't do a lot of reading, and the only books I do take the time out to read I try to make sure they're good. I've heard conservatives going buck wild over Atlas Shrugged but outside of that fringe group it sounds like the book is absolutely awful.

I have a questions that's slightly off-topic, but doesn't warrent a thread of its own.

Should I read Atlas Shrugged, Watership Down, or The Animals Of Farthing Wood?

Re: What's the worst book you've ever finished?

If it is anything compared to the excellent TV/cartoon series (damn, that brings back memories), the Animals of Farthing Wood will be excellent.

I'm kind of impressed Ajax, didn't think you'd know how to read big books.

Meh, the only one I can recommend from personal experience is Atlas, but from what I know of you it doesn't sound like your cup of tea.

As far as the bible, I'm in agreement with you, but I figured posting that would just be needling the Christians on the forum.

The only book I've ever read that I where I could genuinely say, in disgust, "This 'author' is a fucking hack".

'Breakdown' by William W. Johnstone

It's like bubbly, nugget-laden ass effluvia expressed through a paper medium.

Maybe it's just me but, if a book sucks, that fact is usually evident long before the end of the book. And, if a book sucks, why finish it?

It was so bad, and, like I said, the first genuine hack I'd ever read, that I had to finish it.

I'm not quite sure what you're getting at. Normally I'd ignore your trolling but the question is so weird. Reading "big books" is just reading. Are you saying your surprised I know how to read?

Maybe you can't read the question correctly, i dunno.

But it is you has, in the past, expressed surprise that "blaques" can read and write, in the minds of conservatives. Ha, and you accuse me of trolling.

Re: What's the worst book you've ever finished?

The worst book I've ever finished was Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. The editor, if there was one, could have improved it immeasurably if he had cut every other word. I only finished this long winded borefest because it came so highly recommended by a usually reliable friend. It was a week out of my life that I'll never get back. I'll never touch anything else by this windbag of a writer.

I enjoyed the book - wasn't looking for historical accuracy, but that may be one of the worst movies I've ever tried to watch. Never got through it.

That would have been hilarious with a different typo. On to the subject, I've never finished a bad book. I have a rule, if I'm not enjoying the book, I stop reading it. This may be why I never took a lit class.

I love to read and always enjoyed my Lit classes but we were required to read Beowulf in H.S. and I have to say I struggled to get through it.

Re: What's the worst book you've ever finished?

ANYTHING by Clive Cussler (and I always wondered, could it be his real name IS Dirk Pitt.

HOW does he become a constant NYT Bestseller? Is NUMA (yes, it's real, he actually runs it, though it's got nothing to do with the govt.) secretly some sort of cult like Scientology, and goes around buying up all his books to make him look popular?

They don't start off that badly, but then, once we get into what is laughingly called the 'story' things rapidly go from wildly improbable to downright fucking silly. And the 'characters', my god, how can you write about people who simply never EVER change and are stereotypes of themselves somehow from the very beginning of each and every story to the awful but oh so welcome end.

I used to wonder why they only made one movie when he's written so many books, but obviously even Hollywood can't stand him.
