160 Gigabits per second bandwidth?

IBM has been researching optical chipsets which could deliver enough bandwidth to accurately transmit high-definition signals across the net.
The optical chipsets have an expected transmission rate of 160 Gigs per second. In other words, I could send my 80 GB hard drive across the net in about a second.
No choppy signals, no degradation of quality, no more posting videos at YouTube.
The chips are expected to be available by around 2010! Amazing.

To put that into a human perspective, IBM says that this increase in bandwidth is enough to allow a high definition, feature-length file to download in a second instead of the 30 minutes it can take today on what are characterized as high-speed networks

Isn't the draw of You-tube more that they serve your video, so that you don't have to serve them yourself?

The gov't should refuse to allow them to release this technology until every home the world over is wired for it. If they are allowed to release it, you then separate the net into the "have's" and the "have nots".

Go net neutrality!!!!

Uh, as the US is already migrating to haves and have nots in most material issues, why should the net be exempt?

Actually, I'm merely mocking lame net neutrality arguments.

Now if we could just get rid of these awful mechanical hard drives, we'd be set.

That's only part of the appeal, in my opinion. Haven't you ever gone there just to entertain yourself?

I also like how almost all the video sites give you the code to embed videos. I've found sites that are composed of nothing but embedded YouTube videos, and if they can get enough traffic, advertisers will pay them, and YouTube provided most of the bandwidth to make it happen.
