Scientists discover Earth-like planet

Namaste,

Most Habitable Planet Outside Solar System Is Found

Quote:
Scientists have discovered a Earth-like planet just outside our solar system.

European astronomers found the planet orbiting a single star and believe it may have a tropical climate that could support water and potentially life.

Swiss professor Michel Mayor, said: "We have discovered a very low mass planet. In fact, it is the lowest mass ever discovered. It's only five times the mass of the Earth.

"This planet is probably a rocky planet, maybe 50 per cent larger than the Earth, orbiting the star with a period of 13 days."

Although the investigators have not yet seen their discovery, they said its measurements indicate it has a planet not much bigger than Earth pulling on it.
This presents a major discovery in SETI. The proven existence of an earthlike planet capable of maintaining water would be a significant proof towards the possibility of life. Many planets discovered so far has been of Jupiterian size.

It would be a validation of
Quote:
n<subscript>e is average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets
within the Drake Equation. The full description of the Drake Equation can be found here: Drake equation-From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I, am particularly impacted, because I firmly believe that life exist elsewhere and it is only a matter of time before it is proven. I don't believe in UFO's but definately believe in life in space.

What say you?

In Peace,
Eglaelin

I agree. It would be shocking if our planet was the only one in the universe that hosts life.

13 day rotation, eh? I'll bet the birthdays really start to pile up out there. : )

Good news. I too believe in life in outer space and hope that this turns up more interesting results.

Re: Scientists discover Earth-like planet

Hey, using current earth technology, it would only take us 19,569 years to travel there!

Plus, I'm a little skeptical about the possibility of a planet that is tidally locked to it's sun would be a good supporter of life. One side would be incredibly hot and the other would be incredibly cold. The only real habitable spots would be the areas that straddle the 'back' and 'front' of the planet. I'm very interested how they got the idea that the planet's average temperatures range between 32 and 104 degrees...

Speakeasy, I don't know if it is meant to make people laugh, but everytime I read your sig and think of "Day the Earth Stood Still", I laugh when I think of those words. : )

Do you ever have any thoughts that you don't see fit to waste our time by posting?

Re: Scientists discover Earth-like planet

Ever watch Star Trek? Then how come scientist arent working on improving space travel? I think its time for scientist to work on building a spaceship Than can go 250,000 MPH. Right now the space shuttle goes up to 17,500 MPH. Why cant they build something like this and go 250,000 MPH

Steve, do me a favor. Go to your local community college and take a course in Physics and/or Astronomy, along with maybe College-level Algebra and a Calculus course. Then maybe even take Physics II. I think you'll answer this question and more with that.

Or just go independently research propulsion, zero gravity, or other areas of astrophysics dealing with space travel.

Or just keep posting inane bullshit.

And, not just that, but he also reduces are capacity for near-luminal travel. With every post that you make here, you set the course of space-flight back several years.

Re: Scientists discover Earth-like planet

Exciting stuff if it does indeed have water and thus life. Problem is that so far that isn't proven yet, and wont be proven anytime soon. Plus its 20.5 light-years away, which can't be traveled in a lifetime or even two, heck it'd take at least 260 generations of a spaceship filled with a group of fertile young men and women (though they're mostly likely not going to stay fertile, and the numbers aren't likely to stay that precise). Much more efficient to grow human life on a spaceship, if not entire ethical or as much fun. Of course this assumes we have a spacecraft big enough that could not only support human life but support human life for a very very long time, which we don't, and are physically/mentally capable of staying in space that long which we probably aren't.

Until then, get used to Earth, because we're going to be here for a while. Its not like its such a bad place, the people aren't always the greatest, but eh you can live with that. Indeed, I like the earth, you can go ahead and blow yourself to outer space but count me out. All this discovery really does is give us the possibility for life and as such we should be able to find an even better candidate. Yay, lets discovery life on another planet and in-slave it, bomb it out of existence, or turn it into us (assuming it has such a large brain in the first place).

I find it a dramatic leap in imagination to believe this planet sustains life.
