Cell phone jammers bring sweet silence

Quote:
The jamming technology works by sending out a radio signal so powerful that phones are overwhelmed and cannot communicate with cell towers. The range varies from several feet to several yards, and the devices cost from $50 to several hundred dollars. Larger models can be left on to create a no-call zone.

Hot damn, I didn't know they had these......But I now know where I can order one.

Far too many people are inconsiderate with their cell phones.

Wow, up to an $11,000 fine for the first offense if you get nabbed using one.

Pass.

Yea, it is a steep fine.
I know I'll never order one, but it would be soooo sweet at times.

Where I live, cell phone technology hasnt really caught up. Almost nobody has them. Society is much nicer without them. Very handy to have for sure at times. Imagine life without people walking through the store on the phone. Its much more pleasant.

You got that right, the only thing I like about them is the contact I have with my two kids when they are out - other than that these days of "constant availability" is truly over the top.

Re: Cell phone jammers bring sweet silence

It would have been nice to have this in the classroom since cell phone ringing is very distracting while lecturing. But, after the Virginia Tech shooting, that will never happen, now.

I resisted getting a cell phone for many years since I like the idea of being incommunicato for periods of time during the day; it's peaceful. But when I found out that it would be a cheaper method of calling family (we are all over the country) than long distance charges, I caved.

I know what you mean.
It's sad that you can't even go and have diner without people talking out loud on one.

I am blown away with how much thier use has grown. When I travel somewhere everydamnbody has one. Where I live if you cant reach somebody, you just call the radio station and they will put a message on the air to call you. You folks can keep them damn things away from me.

I switched to VOIP about a year ago it cost me $40.00 per month and I get unlimited calls to anywhere. All you need is a high speed internet connection..

What's VOIP? I'm intrigued, because I wouldn't mind not having a cell.

Don't forget - every mobile phone has an off switch.

And I use it often. Try getting students to remember it; that's another story.

Voice Over Internet Protocol

Basically it packetizes your phone call and sends it to the recipient.

In order to be mobile with it, though, you'd have to be in an area with wifi coverage (or use a cell phone).

IMHO, the technology still has a little way to go. That, and my phone provider won't let me get rid of my landline and keep my DSL.

When I taught, I had an easy policy. If I see the phone, it's mine for the day. If I see it again, it's mine for the year.

Funny, all it takes is one nabbed phone and I didn't see another one.

Thanks! Then I think I'll keep my eye on the advances in this VOIP. When it gets better and wifi is more available (although we have a lot of free hot zones around here), it sounds like a pretty good idea, to me.
