Whoah...wireless electricity..now this is cool

Now this would be pretty cool...the applications are immense I would think once perfected and enlarged...power could be transmitted to anywhere in the world with low orbit satellites...I'm thinkin?

Re: Whoah...wireless electricity..now this is cool

I'm sitting in a hotel room in Santa Barbara, CA. I'm online via a wireless internet connection. On the desk next to me is a bluetooth headset which I use with my cell phone. Next to that is the remote for the television. In my truck, I have a remote for the garage door opener at home. In my music studio at home, in the closet, is a wireless transmitter and receiver I used to use when I played in a band. Across the room from that closet is my wireless router. In the camera bag next to the desk on which the wireless transmitter sits is a wireless trigger for my camera.

We've got wireless for everything else, why not electricity?

I can only dream of a wireless TIG welder. just getting rid of the foot pedal control would be a Godsend.

Anyone else here interested in Tesla and his work? He wanted to resonate the entire Earth at a certain frequency with high potential electrical fields, that would have enabled the worldwide wireless distribution of power. Like so many of his other ideas and inventions, people dismissed him as a crock and didn't take his ideas seriously, until the modern era, when people in the electrical engineering community began to realize he was right about a lot of things.

Different than the topic of this thread, but still related and very interesting.

Re: Whoah...wireless electricity..now this is cool

It sounds to me like the 'wireless electricity' only works within a very short range; the article does not say how close the device must be to it's charge source, but it says they must be close together. So I'm thinking that this isn't describing a real power delivery system.

I'm not a physicist or electrical engineer, but my understanding is that electricity always looses power when transferred over long distances, even with low resistance. It seems to me that travelling through space would be rather higer resistance than through wires, but I don't know how Tesla's stuff works.

its about resistance, potential, receiving and power consumption. There’s are also a humongous difference between sending electrons through the air and finely tuned frequency allotted signals.

It's done by inductance.
There was talk of putting coils under highways, and in electric cars, and the cars could draw power by inductance, and have unlimited range on the highway, using batteries only when it got off the highway.

Inductance, like a transformer? Dosen't that have to be really close to work, on the order of mm, or at least cm? It seems like that would be hard to put under pavement. Cool idea, though, if it could be done. Imagine quiet highways, with no exaust smell.
