Dubai's moving skyscraper

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Dubai plans 'moving' skyscraper

Man, those Emirates don't fuck around. Dubai is fast becoming one of the number one destinations for them what have.

Aside from the crazy design of this building, I find it interesting that it is supposed to be energy independent, or even feed energy back into the grid.

A very ambitious project to be sure. Best of luck to them in pulling it off.

I MUST have one of those apartments. I have to get right to work on the next Harry Potter Phenomena.

I wonder if this will catch on. If it really does make power it should, now if it falls down....

I dunno, an indoor ski slope seems kinda easy if you've got the resources to build it. While a building with 80 feet of moving parts is something entirely different.

Remarkable, but kind of useless honestly when it comes to any kind of real practical use I imagine. Then again, they've got so much money and don't know what to do with it but build lots of buildings. I'm looking forward to the Mile High building myself.

Meh, they could have been using that money in helping to secure our ports but instead they're building this sort of thing.

But of course this has a practical purpose, think of the sheer tourism revenue generated out of people goin to see it, think of the rights to secure events there etc. Its just another step in helping Dubai become as much of a globalised power house name as NYC, London, Paris, Tokyo, L.A. etc.

That's gotta' be an engineering nightmare.

Good luck to 'em, but I don't think we'll see it in our lifetime...

Fantastic. Whenever I'm on a really high floor in a tall building, I'm constantly thinking how much more comfortable it would be if the room was spinning around.

Re: Dubai's moving skyscraper

Yes, you would be totally apposed to taking certain substances when in a room at the top of a building eh?

But no there's a restauarant somewhere that revolves like that, there's the Cears tower were you can see down through it etc (better hope that glass doesn't break! ).

Every big city has what are seen to be these unusually quirky monuments that serve no purpose, like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the London Eye/Millenium wheel or whatever they call it these days, what "practical" purpose does sticking a huge lady off the coast of NY serve? It usually reflects on the success of the city tbh.

Another toy/attraction for the Disneyland of the Middle East. At least the UAE is proof of what can be done by capitalizing from the ownership of large oil fields....

Citizens from other Middle East countries should ask themselves why their governments are not following the example...

Actually that's a misconception that this is all done by oil money, revenues from petroleum and natural gas contribute less than 6%. While the main money from the UAE is made from trade, manufacturing and financial services.

They are, Kuwait's sky line is full of new buildings, and Prince Alwaleed of Saudi Arabia is going to build the Mile Tower. Its just not at the same rate as UAE, have dozens of projects going at the moment if not more.
