Re: Walking on cornstarch
There was a bit on a Science Channel show that showed a new kind of body armor. It seems the problem was that Kevlar cloth, while it can stop a bullet, allowed a piercing instrument to pass right between the fibers.
What they made was a thick liquid which they treated the cloth with that stopped ANYTHING from going through.
Under normal conditions the fluid is more like a gel, but when any pressure was applied the molecules linked up to form an impenetrable barrier. Once the force was withdrawn the fluid went back to its disorganized state.
In another demonstration they had a small vial filled with the stuff. A steel rod, about the thickness of a nail was easily sunk into it, as well as slowly pulled out. But the moment the host PULLED on it with any force, the rod was held fast.
I think the show was "Cool Stuff; How it Works". The whole series is a must see.
And as far as shows which educate, the Discovery Channel and it's sister network, the Science Channel pack more info in one hour of programming than the entire run of the Ellen Degeneres show.
Good for her to show some educational material, but the show is strictly daytime entertainment. I wouldn't watch it with the expectation of learning anything
