Walking on cornstarch

Wow! I've never seen this before...it definitely wasn't taught in my science classes.

It was interesting to watch but I think the point could have been made without wasting 2000 boxes of cornstartch and spending around $4900 for a tv trick. One of the reasons I tend to avoid tv and most movies is because of the waste involved. I truly look forward to the day when CGI reaches the point where movies can be made without such waste and destruction.

Sincerely Yours,

Re: Walking on cornstarch

If it gets some children interested in science, it wasn't a waste.

How many people got interested in science watching talk shows? I haven't ever heard or read about a scientist laying his/her interest in science to a talk show.
How many children get to watch the Ellen DeGeneris show? I know of very few.

People don't get interested in science by simply watching a skit on a talk show.

I will stand by my statement that the point could have been made without wasting 2000 boxes of cornstarch.

Sincerely Yours,

Kids may not be watching Ellen but they're damn sure watching these short videos on the internet. This particular one was emailed to me by my ten year old grandson's other grandmother and you can bet he'll see it too. And yes, the point could have probably been made another way but having someone walk across a vat filled with cornstarch and water definitely grabbed my attention.

I actually hated science before I watched that video.

Think of the cornstarch, dammit! All that precious cornstarch wasted, and for what?

Actually, it is. It is a trend in American culture that we pretty much ignore. We, as a country, are the most wasteful collection on the planet. We waste food, we waste materials, we waste fuel and we waste energy. The majority of the things we waste are completely unnecessary.

How much food is wasted each year for entertainment purposes?
How much water is wasted each year for entertainment purposes?
How much energy is wasted each year for entertainment purposes?
How many vehicles were destroyed last year to make TV and movies?

I do think this is a national tragedy.

My children are fascinated by science. Is it because they learned about it on TV? If is because they learned about it in a movie? No! They are fascinated by science because I teach them about it and encourage their interests in it. TV, movies and popular culture surely don't have anything to do with it because popular culture is actually anti-science and anti-technology. How accurate is the science in movies and TV? Its not. I don't want my children learning science from TV because TV doesn't get it right.

INSULTINGLY STUPID MOVIE PHYSICS

Re: Walking on cornstarch

If this weren't posted in the science and technology area, we could be debating the suitability of children watching anything from the Ellen Degenres show. What sort of a parent or grandparent would expose thier children/grandchildren to such perils?

It's all part of the Agenda.

I've never watched the Ellen Degenres show so I don't have a clue as to whether it's suitable for children or not. I'm assuming that it's along the lines of Oprah and other shows of that nature, some good segments that are suitable and some that are not. However, I wouldn't hesitate to show my grandson this video and can't imagine why anyone would object. I found it fascinating and I'm sure my grandson would, too.

Well, I would rather say, that the modern live style embrasses waste... and that is perhaps a tragedy.

Waste of food for entertainment purposes is quite old... but building inferiour homes just to get an few extra square meters of space and then spend decades of heating and cooling through the years and driving a overmotorized vehicle... those are the tragedies...

The clown throwing a cake is really old... That show is entertainment and IF it would actually explain how the molekular structure make that cool trick work, it would even be educational...

I've never seen Ellen's show, but when I see any clips of it, I really do want to see it. I like her sense of humor and she seems nice and pretty clean in humor all around. I also like her self-depracating style.

And, cornstach and water is a stress-thickening fluid, one of the types of non-newtonian fluids (a fluid which has a non-constant viscosity, dependant on the external stress applied to it and are often polymers or colloidal fluids). As more external stress is applied to it, it's viscosity becomes higher. Quicksand (colloidal) and the material for Silly Putty (slightly reticulated/crosslinked polymer) are also stress-thickening fluids. But, don't try to run across quicksand.

These are not the most common types of non-newtonian fluids. More common is the opposite type, one that has a decrease in its viscosity as the amout of external stress applied to it increases. Yogurt is a good example. It's viscosity is higher when it is at rest, but when one applies stress to it, it's viscosity decreases. One can see this when they stir yogurt - it gets a bit thinner.

Still, saying it is not nearly as fun as seeing it demonstrated. Good for her for having this type of stuff on her show.
