But, I think this is what you're looking for: Store Windows Updates locally for subsequent installations

By the way, if the machines are not connected to anything, I don't think regular patches from Microsoft is very important, as most of those are designed to plug security holes and prevent exploits. If there's nothing that's apparently going wrong with any of your device drivers or day to day operations, why bother?
Mainly because I have been told that it can be easily done through an IEEE cable port.

That, and I'd like to keep it as up to date as I can ... just because And I don't want to have to try to keep track of every little update that has been installed or not installed. Currently the standalone IS up to SP3, but I know there have been a few newly released updates after SP3.

Mainly a curiousity. I've heard that it can be done ... but have seen no clearly written, fail/foolproof instructions on how to accomplish it.

Probably expecting too much Still curious though. I'll try it one of these days when I'm bored and everyone is out of the house. Too easy to get distracted and screw something up with a 2 yr old and a 4 yr old that demand CONSTANT attention. God, its CONSTANT. Try and do some detail oriented work under those circumstances

Oh, the other thing you can do is hook both machines up to the router, and completely block external access from the kids' machine. Then you can put the updates on a shared drive from the connected machine.

I was told I didn't need a router though. By someone else.

Just the IEEE cable.

Is there really no way around buying a router ?

Can't connections be bridged with just the cable as long as:

Each "station" needs to have the same workgroup name.

Each "station" needs to have a unique (that's different) computer name.

Each "station" needs to have a unique (that's different) IP address ?

I don't know ? Why will this not work ? Or should it ?
