    Disk Drives going bye bye

Why disc drives are an endangered species - CNN.com

I agree that this is the trend. As USB flash drives become more popular companies will have to figure out how to market their wares on them if not over the internet exclusively.

Solid State drives, USB more and the fact that right now you can barely fit 8g on a double sided DVD. How this will affect the movie buying public I am not sure. That seems to be the only place that disks might be still around.

With me it has just been with movies or reinstalling old video games.

I predict that CD/DVD drive will become extinct soon, We always just use flash drives for temporary storage or seeker net transfer of files.

Cannot use cd/dvd much for backup purposes, I just bought a 2tb portable for less than the cost of 2 tB of blank use once CD disks.

Movies will shift to blu-ray so that we can get HD and all the other stuff that they put on movies now.

Distribution of programs and games can be done much easier and economical on line than selling retail boxed packages.
I always find it strange that only reasonable people agree with me.

I pretty much use burnable CDs/DVDs to create a 4th backup for my photos. I already have them backed up on 3 hard drives. I also burned 10 CDs to give photos to the other parents with kids on my son's sports team. Giving someone a 10 cent CD is still cheaper than a $2 flash drive, and they're probably less likely to lose it on their way home.

I still buy Blu Ray DVDs though, since I got a good set-up and streaming, while somewhat viable, still doesn't provide surround sound (unless you have the equipment compatible with their version of stream), and its still connection dependent.

I was surprised though, Netflix is streamed in 5.1 (but I don't have the right equipment apparently):

Granted, this is a stretch, and if it ever happens possibly the last thing you'll worry about is photos ... but a big EMP pulse (nuclear blast or just a straightforward lightning strike to your house) could potentially wipe out all of your flash and magnetic storage. DVDs and CDs would be completely fine though. That's about the main use I see for them in the future, is just an alternative way to backup small amounts of key data that isn't subject to wiping by a huge voltage or magnetic field. I suppose good cloud storage would do that as well.

Hmmm, perhaps all TVs will come with a USB port at some point and USBs will replace DVDs/Blu Ray discs or otherwise streamed to your internet connected TV?

Considering the new tech for video on computers is HDMI... you can connect your PC/Laptop direct to your 60" TV.... at least until my wife yells at me about the TV not being for internet games but for movies and such.

When buying my latest TV the only real requirement I had is that it be internet enabled. It is wired directly to the router and from there I can project what's on my computer on to the TV or pull content directly from the web (Netflex, Youtube, etc.)

I have a Sony Blu ray with internet ready capability.

I am probably going to build a separate win 8 computer to pump to the tv as the Blu Ray is limited. As will your internet ready TV. With a PC actually running the input, you can do a lot more than just stream from the internet. Might want to consider this.

Hell that is the future... just had a great idea for a new service.

I don't think disks will be dropped just yet as worldwide broadband coverage is just not at a point where everyone can go download only. The next gen consoles which are due next year will both use blue ray drives so that alone will guarantee there is a huge available install base for boxed disks.
