USA qualifies for the 2010 World Cup (highlights within)

highlights: YouTube - USA - Honduras 3-2 All Goals & Highlights

Last night's game was one of the most entertaining to watch I've ever seen the USA play. We went into Honduras, a country which has been torn by political strife but remains united behind its national soccer team, and came from behind to beat a team which had won every single game at home thus far in World Cup qualifying. Landon Donovan showed extremely good leadership on the field and was largely responsible for the second of Conor Kasey's (who?) two goals a few minutes before netting one of his own. The referee tried to fuck us by first awarding the questionable free kick which led to Honduras' first goal and then by not making the INCREDIBLY OBVIOUS offside call on their second but the boys showed that they can overcome the odds.

It's been awhile since I was so proud of the team and this was a damned impressive win. Coming from behind away from home in such a hostile environment is NOT an easy thing to do. Now, thankfully, we can place our attention on next summer in South Africa and finding a way to fix our atrocious midfield.

Awesome to know that we have the singer from Midnight Oil playing for us.

His goal for us, #2, was the biznatch.

Good to hear that the USA will be part of the football world cup 2010 in South Africa and in a way it would be nice to see them in a group with North Korea.

Should be a nice match, at least from a political point of view.

It's good to hear that Landon Donovan is still doing alright, as he has been part of my favourite club (Bayer 04 Leverkusen) before ( + last year a 1/3 of the season for the Bavarian Munich scum) and unhappily never made it over here and so prefered to be a "star" in the USA, instead of being a real soccer player in Europe.

Anyway I wish him and the rest of the USA team all the best for the world cup (even although my teams former players Frankie Hajduk and Tom Dooley aren't active any more).

Just wanted to mention that Denmark qualified yesterday, with a 1-0 win over Sweden.

Take that, Zlatan Ibrahimovic (crybaby)...

Good to hear another easy victim being qualified and so really hope we'll get the Danes in our group.

!992 still hurts badly and so a round of ass kicking the Danish dynamite around would be nice!

Anyway good to hear you've qualified and all the best to the team!

See you in South Africa.

Now, now, Germany...don´t get cocky We all now what happened in ´92, a match the German media called a walkover.

How did that turn out?

But good luck to you too. May the best team (Denmark...) win!

Denmark is hardly the best team, but they/we have done pretty fucking good in the whole qualification with zero defats.

If we can continue this good style of solidarity soccer, then we got a fair shot at winning the whole tournament I think.

I was watching Ireland play Italy earlier in their qualifying match for the UEFA region qualifying round followed by the Mexico-El Salvador match (4-1) where Mexico also qualified. I was following the US-Honduras match via LiveScore.com - Soccer Live Scores as I could online given Honduras wasn't giving out television rights to the US. The tricky part was avoiding sites that were only trying to hand out viruses instead and there was plenty of that online.

Casey was a key player last night scoring the first two goals and setting up the third by Donovan with the PK goal after Casey got fouled in the box, and it made my night seeing the US qualify for its fifth straight World Cup finals.

I have a ticket for Wednesday's last WC qualifier match against Costa Rica at RFK Stadium in Washington DC, and gladly the pressure to qualify is off the US now. Yet, the match still has meaning because it helps determine whether Costa Rica or Honduras gets the third and last automatic qualifying spot from the CONCACAF region and who, as the fourth place finisher, will have to go to the playoff facing the fifth place CONMEBOL team (South America) to earn a spot.

Teams G W T L GF GA GD PTS
*United States 9 6 1 2 17 11 +6 19
*Mexico 9 6 0 3 16 10 +6 18
Costa Rica 9 5 0 4 13 13 0 15
Honduras 9 4 1 4 16 11 +5 13
x El Salvador 9 2 2 5 9 14 −5 8
x Trinidad and Tobago 9 1 2 6 8 20 −12 5

Honduras must beat El Salvador on Wednesday when Costa Rica plays the US. If it does win its match, then Costa Rica must beat the US.

I'm wondering whether the US will now change its earlier released lineup now that it has qualified.

On the one hand, there's plenty to recommend that it uses benchwarmers and new prospects. That would save the US the risks of seeing key players getting injuries or sanctions going into the finals due to red cards or accumulated yellow cards during the qualifying round. It also gives the US team a chance to test its benchwarmers and new prospects and give them time on the pitch.

On the other hand, there are good arguments to be made that the US would rather have Honduras in the World Cup finals than Costa Rica and, if so, then it's also in the US' interests to beat or tie them and hope that Honduras wins. I'm rather divided on that, though, as I can make good arguments for Honduras and Costa Rica being the better side for a finals appearance.

The EC '92 aside, I'd rather prefer to see the Danes win the WC, than those Italians or Brasilian again

We suck, we'll be lucky to make it out of the group stages, BG85.

I actually think this Italian side under Lippi is very disappointing...they're not showing the quality of a WC winning side.

They lost like one of their first matches under him against Brazil in a friendly in London, and while they may have been robbed out of that game (bastard of an English refferee) since then they have put in some real mediocre performances.

Luckily for them, other than Ireland, there is nobody in their group really worth a shit.

Yeah, me too.

Other than Kaka, i hate just about every player in the Brazil squad.

Here's hoping that Portugal will fail to beat Malta tonight and that way they can't make the play offs.

If they do though, i hope they draw France and that way we'll be rid of one of them. But of course, Fifa wouldn't allow for that, they need all those black players from France to be on the field...

So what? Denmark sucks. 92, this certainly isn't, nor are you gonna pull off what Greece did in 04.

Your qualification is about on par with England's participation into the tournament (another team full of shit that thinks they can conquer the world...)

He's still probably the second or third best striker in the world behind Villa (and whether you classify Messi as a striker), and plays for the best club in the world at the moment.

Name me a successfull Danish striker that is worth $70 million...who plays for any recognized team.
