There are certain places that are predisposed to specific disasters. California has earthquakes. If you choose to live in San Francisco it's not a question as to if there is an earthquake, but rather when. Eventually, a heavily devastating one is going to hit at some point so that is a risk you should accept if you are going to live there. If you aren't willing to have a plan in place as to how you are going to deal with it, then don't live there and don't expect the rest of us to bail you out if you do.

I'm not talking about a freak flash flood of 20 feet of water in Las Vegas or a sandstorm in Vermont. I'm addressing people that live in specific areas that are known for being targets for specific disasters and then expect everyone to feel sorry for them when it hits. That's bullshit. You know it's going to happen eventually so be prepared. Don't expect someone else to pick up the tab.
The west coast is earthquake and wildfire prone, the north east is flood prone, the mid-west has tornado alley, northern states have blizzards, many states suffer from droughts and the south and east coast have hurricanes. For you to say that people shouldn't live in these areas is really quite asinine since any state can and most likely will eventually suffer from a natural disaster.
I've already told you that I've faced only three hurricanes in 46 years, so tell me, why shouldn't I live here? In the past 50 years, Allegheny County in Pennsylvania has flooded 120 times but yet I've heard the bullshit about living down here ever since Katrina from people like you. Get over it! We're part of the US and we pay taxes just like every other state so if we have a natural disaster, I damn sure expect the government to help in some way with the aftermath.

What about someone who chooses to live in a city prone to terrorist attacks, why should the rest of us have to pay for that?

I just don't think these evacuations should be forced. Shouldn't people decide for themselves if they want to leave or take their chances?

Honestly, some people are so stupid they need to be saved from themselves.

In 2003, we had the "Cedar Fire" here in San Diego. There were countless examples of forced evacuations. Had some of these people opted to stay behind in their homes, they'd have been killed; no question about it. The fire was too big and was moving far too quickly for fire crews to keep up, and it consumed, literally, everything in its' path.

I can understand the desire to want to do everything to try to save ones' home. But I also think that desire can easily over-power common sense...

In the case of a mandatory evac down here, no one was actually forced to leave. No one showed up at my door and told me I had to leave even though I was in the evac zone. Had they done that in New Orleans, they would have had to provide transportation to those unable to leave and as we know, Nagin failed in that area.

Last year there was a report that Conneticut was the least disaster prone area of the United States. Apparently The Hurricanes miss it, most of the major snow falls go north of it, it isn't highly prone to flooding and a few other possibles. So lets all move to Conneticut.

Shouldn't they have a right to kill themselves?

I agree. It shouldn't be the government's job to protect people from natural disasters.
