Re: New States?

If Canada would break up, say that Quebec would become independent, are there parts of Canada who might apply for US Statehood?

So...we need to add five new states at once. Then it would be an addition of another row. That would be OK.
We'll just have to wait for the Iran, NK and France invasions.

Poor Puerto Ricans.

They really get dumped on by the rest of us Latins.

I doubt it.

I mean, why?

Other people like Canada.

You are right - except for Swedes when Canada beat Sweden in the Ice Hockey World Championship finals...

They'd have the same number of Representatives, but gain Senators, that's a big boost in political power.

True. Maybe it's a bad idea.

I guess that's why I don't have any power...

Not likely. The trading downwards in legal protections would likely be a hard sell.

And Quebec actually separating has about the same chance as Sweden reuniting with Norway. Quebec's threat of separatisim is a policy designed for maximizing Quebec's fiscal benefit. It is a rationally chosen policy designed to get Canadians to subsidize Quebec. It is extremely profitable for Quebec.

It is far more likely to find a referendum in Canada voting to kick Quebec out!

I think not. We appreciate our sovereignty too much. Our innate inferiority complex would go into overdrive if we had to adapt to their governmental system. Any suggestion of integration with the US is met with hostile reaction. Even adopting a common currency is out of the question, and the Security & Prosperity Partnership is increasingly looked at with suspicion.

There are those who push for this, but there is probably a greater chance of Canada joining the EU. (Hey, Turkey isn't in Europe either!)

Personally, I would welcome you, if you would apply.

I bet most people of Texas regrets that now. Without that stupid union you could concentrate on punishing real criminals instead of petty drug dealers, and stop the invasion of illegal aliens.

That would be extremely stupid of them, since they would loose their free healthcare and education systems....among other things. People in the northern U.S border states would for the same reasons benefit a lot from becoming a part of Canada instead. Apparently they are too stupid to realize that.
