Detroit mayor in trouble again, and the city continues to die
One would think that a guy, like Kwame, who is currently Vice President of the National Conference of Democratic Mayors and its representative to the Democratic National Committee and now in deep trouble again, again, would garner mainstream media attention.....oh and his mother, U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, represents Michigan's 13th District in the United States House of Representatives, and serves as the President of the Congressional Black Caucus in the 110th United States Congress.
Detriot is a city in deep deep trpouble, 14% unemployment rate, murder and violent crime of the US etc.... Crime in Detroit, Michigan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia what does it take? By April 2005, Kilpatrick's approval rating in Detroit was sharply declining due to the scandals and a perceived lack of improvement in the city. As a result, the April 17, 2005 issue of Time Magazine listed him as one of the three worst big-city mayors in the United States , along with Dick Murphy of San Diego and John F. Street of Philadelphia. In May 2005, the Detroit Free Press reported that over the first 33 months of his term, Kilpatrick had charged over $210,000 on his city-issued credit card for travel, meals, and entertainment. In October 2005 Kilpatrick caused controversy with an advertisement which compared media criticism of him to lynch mobs. An interview with Detroit Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. Kilpatrick, family spend day in Florida as calls for ouster grow January 24, 2008 By JOE SWICKARD, SUZETTE HACKNEY, JIM SCHAEFER and ZACHARY GORCHOW The heads of Detroit’s 17 municipal unions may decide today that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick should be asked to step down or face recall, as revelations that he and his chief of staff lied under oath at a police whistle-blower trial rocked City Hall. Also today, a lawyer who represented the officers who sued acknowledged to the Free Press that there’s a confidentiality agreement containing undisclosed details of the $8.4-million case settlement, which was reached in October. City lawyers had previously told the Free Press no such agreement existed. On Wednesday the Free Press reported that their text messages show Kilpatrick and his chief of staff, Christine Beatty, lied at the whistle-blower trial when they testified last summer they did not have a sexual relationship. On Thursday, Beatty was not in Detroit, according to her lawyer. Kilpatrick and his family were in Tallahassee, Fla., trying to escape the public eye, but his office said they would return to Detroit Thursday evening. As Kilpatrick was shown in photographs kissing his wife, Carlita, in Florida, stunned City Council members said Thursday they were preparing for the possibility that Detroit’s youngest elected mayor might not complete his second term. Council President Ken Cockrel Jr., who would become mayor if Kilpatrick left office, raised the possibility of resignation although he did not call for the mayor to step down. Cockrel said the contradictions between text messages obtained by the Free Press and the mayor’s testimony at the trial “seriously, seriously damages his credibility.” “I’m not prepared to make that call at this point, but certainly if I was him and I was in his shoes, looking at the situation, I’d have to give serious consideration to whether or not I could save the city some further aggravation by making that move,” he said. This morning, the eyes of the city will be on Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, who has called a press conference to discuss whether she will launch a criminal investigation into Kilpatrick’s and Beatty’s trial testimony. Legal experts say that the previously secret text messages may furnish evidence to support perjury or obstruction of justice charges against the pair. Alternatively, Worthy, who has declined comment so far, could ask for the appointment of a special prosecutor by state Attorney General Mike Cox. John Riehl, president of the politically powerful AFSCME Local 207, which represents 900 municipal workers, said Thursday that the labor leaders will consider today whether they will ask Kilpatrick to leave office. “Everybody hopes this is the end of his career. He’s done the city enough damage,” Riehl said. “If one of our people had done this kind of misconduct, we would be fired.” Kilpatrick, family spend day in Florida as calls for ouster grow

Continues to die?
It's dead.

Re: Detroit mayor in trouble again, and the city continues to die
Not to make light of the situation, but no matter who the Detroit Mayor is or will be, he/she is in trouble.
Detroit is an American City with some deep problems. Perhaps they need a superhero like Guiliani to come and save the day. Perhaps that's what he should do after his failed presidential bid. He'd be in trouble from the start and it would be the challenge of his life.

Re: Detroit mayor in trouble again, and the city continues to die
This is really sad. Labor Unions have really destroyed Michigan. Real reform is needed and the vested interests in the state are not going to allow it to happen. It's a shame too. The last governor, John Engler- Republican, turned around the state from 1991 -2003 by instituting welfare reform, tax cuts, education reform, and state government modernization. He left in 2003 and Michigan had 3.3% unemployment, a AAA bond rating and things were looking bright again. But that all changed when they elected a left wing liberal Governor. Higher taxes, increased regulation, and increased bureaucracy are forcing employers to exit in droves. The entire state is a mess. But Detroit - Detroit is a freakin' disaster!
Detroit was once a great city with the highest median household income in the USA. Now it is ranked 66th out of 68 major American cities in median household income. The population has shrunk from 1.8 million in 1950 to 870K today. The city has lost 46% of its population, yet the only cut back the number or city employees by 30%. Of the top 25 employers, 40% of jobs are provided by state, county and city government. The city of Detroit has a ratio of city residents per city employee of 50. Compare to Los Angeles at 108 or Indianapolis at 223. It is easy to see why they are in a never ending downward spiral.

It's their city. Let them trash it if they want and live in the Hell they create. It's not affecting me.

Considering Motor City was at one time the epitome of US industrial dominance its demise marked a turning point for the entire country.

and so, its been a couple of months, Kwame has a few new suits, (no pun intended) a new car and well a suite.....
he sure is styling though aint he? (see pic)...the city dies but that crown is sharp and made fo sho' to be steppin out. Criminal Charges In Text Scandal Detroit (WWJ) -- Criminal charges were filed today against Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty in connection with the "text message scandal" that has enveloped the Mayor's office. There are 12 criminal counts in all, including obstruction of justice, conspiracy, misconduct in office and perjury. "It is perjury if there is lying, and perjury is a crime," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy in announcing the charges, "Even children understand that lying is wrong." "Our investigation has clearly shown that public dollars were used, peoples lives were ruined," said Worthy, downplaying the arguments of those who claimed that the mayor's alleged affair with his chief of staff was a "private matter." Worthy says their investigation has lead to other potential defendants, and they will continue with their investigation. "We have taken instructions and orders from no one," said Prosecutor Worthy, who said they reviewed 40 thousand pages of documents, and talked to many witnesses. "We started out with clean slates and clean minds," said Worthy, who told reporters they made a thorough decision, "Our decision is well reasoned, supported by the evidence and autonomous." Worthy's been investigating claims they lied under oath during a whistle-blowers' trial last summer when they denied having a romantic relationship. Published excerpts of sexually explicit text messages left on Beatty's city-issued pager in 2002 and 2003 appear to contradict their testimony. To read the official release detailing the charges, click here. Kilpatrick has said he expects to be vindicated. A conviction of lying under oath can bring up to 15 years' imprisonment. Detroit's charter calls for the mayor to be removed from office if convicted of a felony. Prosecutor Worthy says that she and her staff have pored over more than 40,000 pages of documents since late January when the Detroit Free Press published excerpts of the sexually explicit text messages left on Beatty's city-issued pager in 2002 and 2003. The messages contradict statements Kilpatrick and Beatty gave under oath during last summer's whistle-blowers' trial when each denied a romantic relationship. Worthy says her investigation has been ``all encompassing'' in terms of possible charges and individuals looked at for possible wrongdoing. "Certainly, we looked at the coverage and the transcripts (of the trial), among many other things,'' Worthy said, prior to making the announcement, adding that copies of the text messages also have been reviewed. She refused to comment on their contents. "There is nothing happy about this situation,'' Worthy said, "Something like this is just not good for anyone. It's tragic for the city, whether we charge or not. What happens in this city, county and region is very important to me. "At the same time, it's still not going to stop me from doing what I think is the right thing to do.'' WWJ Newsradio 950 - Criminal Charges In Text Scandal
