I didn't know it was filmed in WA. I meant no offense.

Also, one who does not live in Alaska can see the aurora borealis, if they live far enough north in the 48 contiguous.

This is an Alaskan Moose. One of the literally hundreds that populate the Anchorage urban area. Probably the highest concentration of moose in the world.
This moose was quite well known around Anchorage as "Buzzwinkle".
This was in downtown Anchorage. The lights you see him wrapped up in are off the trees in town square!

Alaska is a Red State. We have been dedicated GOP on the national level since the late 60s early 70s. Now we have some enviromental nuts who are opposed. But by and large the arguments against ANWR come from non-Alaskan based groups. You see DC and the rest of the country generally view Alaska not as an equal state, but a raw material colony. IMHO.

The way that the Alaska constitution and its oil revenue structure ensure resource wealth with all Alaskans through the PFD and CBR. So the additional revenue and jobs created by opening ANWR is very lucrative.

Also, Alaska lands are %70 owned by DC. So it always makes for a political battle on a buch of issues that are the pet enviromental projects for politicians in the NE and California among other places.
The issues are largely complicated, but the overwhelming majority to the tune of like %80 support opening drilling.

Re: Coolest Governor Ever!

I think you were the person i asked about it, didn't Stevens get ANWR into the budget so it couldn't be fillibustered? And then took it out?

Our respones to questions from one another seem to be as long as Palin's long labors!

None taken, The northern lights are another thing taken largely for granted by Alaskans. I am actually glad to see some shows like Deadliest Catch as it gives some insight into life. But Northern Exposure, Mystery Alaska, and the movie Alaska are very heavy in thier false portrayal of reality here.

For instance, the movie Alaska, where it is based in a SE AK generic community. In the meantime, the polar bear nemesis in the movie lives about 1,000 miles north.

Yeah I think that was me, but I still havent seen anything to support that. I am not an expert on Alaskan politics, but am far more in the know than the average person(Alaska is very small, less than 700,000 statewide. So to come to know the players in the state isnt hard.

If he took it out, then shame on him. But what I have some to learn from Stevens is that he doesnt act without thinking. He is very sly and wise. If he thought he could get it passed he would have.

As a side note, he is facing his toughest political competition since the 40 years he has been elected. The very popular mayor of Anchorage Mark Begich is running against Stevens. Begich is also political royalty in AK. But short of an indictment on the FBI investigations surrounding him, I think Stevens will win re-election here. But he will be 92 at the end of his term if he is re-elected. This is his last shot at being the Senator from Alaska...
for life.

Re: Coolest Governor Ever!

Btw i don't think it was him who actually took out the ANWR attatchement, i think the GOP leadership did because they may have figured the entire budget wouldn't pass.

I have seen my share of being a citizen watching this sort of thing go down. Alaska has 3 former state legislators now in federal prison or awaiting sentancing.

The indictment is possible. But likely I dont know. I will say that if an indictment goes down the Alaska congressional delegation will be 2/3 democrat. But again, those democrats dont have a chance of being elected unless they come out strong on the second amendment and in favor of ANWR.

Re: Coolest Governor Ever!

Sorry, just a correction on what i said above, the indictment may be likely but it would come out of Justice and not from the FBI.

That person I would venture a guess from the reaction of lots of Alaskans would, hell yeah. Now that is patriotism, just on a statehood level.
Barbara Bush left her Midland, Texas residence to birth the standing president in Connecticut, so there is precedence.

I've seen the aurora borealis here in Louisiana and though it's a very rare occurrence, it has happened twice in my lifetime.

The fact her Doc wasnt with her isnt in dispute. The doc was in Alaska awaiting arrival of the number one patient in the state, in the number one hospital east of Seattle, to give a normal birth to a healthy baby and child despite the DS.

It is amazing what modern medicine is capable of and how far women have come where a sitting Governor gives birth to a child while in office and has the drive to return to work on Monday with the little guy in tow.
God Bless America.

Palin said she felt fine but had leaked amniotic fluid and also felt some contractions that seemed different from the false labor she had been having for months.

"I said I am going to stay for the day. I have a speech I was determined to give," Palin said. She gave the luncheon keynote address for the energy conference.

Palin kept in close contact with Baldwin-Johnson. The contractions slowed to one or two an hour, "which is not active labor," the doctor said.

"Things were already settling down when she talked to me," Baldwin-Johnson said. Palin did not ask for a medical OK to fly, the doctor said.

"I don't think it was unreasonable for her to continue to travel back," Baldwin-Johnson said.

So the Palins flew on Alaska Airlines from Dallas to Anchorage, stopping in Seattle and checking with the doctor along the way.

"I am not a glutton for pain and punishment. I would have never wanted to travel had I been fully engaged in labor," Palin said. After four kids, the governor said, she knew what labor felt like, and she wasn't in labor...
Alaska Airlines has no such rule and leaves the decision to the woman and her doctor, said spokeswoman Caroline Boren. Palin was very pleasant to the gate agents and flight attendants, as always, Boren said.

"The stage of her pregnancy was not apparent by observation. She did not show any signs of distress," Boren said.

Palin never got big with this pregnancy. She said she didn't try to hide it but didn't feel a need to alert the airline, either.
Palins' child diagnosed with Down syndrome: Alaska News | adn.com

I will be willing to bet all that she wasn't traveling with a physician or the article would have mentioned it. Since she didn't tell the airline of her advanced pregnancy, they obviously didn't check with the other passengers to see if there was a physician on board that would be able to help her in the case of an emergency.

As for modern medicine, I agree that we've made many advances but women giving birth and then continuing with their jobs as few days later was not unheard of even a few generations ago. It was done out of necessity though and mortality rate was much higher. After my C-Section of a 9 lb. 12 oz baby, I was making my bed while still in the hospital because I felt fine. (I got in trouble with the nurses though!) The day I went into labor with my second child, I was mowing the lawn.

I'm not denying that everything turned out well for the governor but as a nurse, I know that she took a risk and from the source I posted, there are doctors that agree. I just can't understand how y'all can't comprehend that!
