Steve mentioned earlier the Governator. I wont disagree with either sentiments. I will say that I like the politics of my governor more. But Ill gladly admit that is biased.

I doubt it will make a difference. But for Mrs. M and Traveler, here is an update. Her doc told her it was alright to fly back.
Palin confirms baby has Down syndrome: Alaska News | adn.com

Quote:
Palin was in Texas at a Republican Governors Association energy conference last week when early signs of labor began. She said she called her doctor early Thursday morning after some amniotic fluid began to leak. She talked over what was happening with her doctor, and they consulted about what to do.

She gave the keynote luncheon address, then she and Todd caught an Alaska Airlines flight back to Alaska. She said was never in full-blown labor on the plane but was having a contraction or two every hour.

"By my fifth child, I know what labor feels like," Palin said. That wasn't labor, she said.

The governor said she won't take a maternity leave but will bring Trig with her to work. Her spokesperson later clarified, at Palin's request, that the governor will take time off for medical appointments, physical therapy and whatever Trig needs.

Yup. I would wager good money that the actual MD would know better (as would the individual woman, too).

I also question the MD's decision to let her fly. Unless she had a doctor on board, I'll continue to say that it was an irresponsible decision given the problems that could have occurred. Just today, my daughter was waiting for her six-week checkup when the doctor was called in for a delivery. The nurse told her it would only take about 30 minutes as this was the woman's third child. However, they ended up rescheduling my daughter's appt. because there were unforeseen complications with the pregnant woman which meant the doctor wouldn't be back for awhile. It's stupid to take any risk when we have some of the best neo-natal care in the world!

Actually, our neonatal care isn't that great.

Anecdotal evidence aside, We are talking about the Governor of Alaska. Do you assume that she boarded a flight without knowing there was a doctor on the flight? The Governor is not wreckless.
Being an avoider of Texas I have never been to Dallas. But it is a major city and I am sure the facilities there are top notch, with very talented doctors, I would expect nothing less.
If we look at how events unfolded, where she made a decision after consulting her physician, and made a very routine flight, and went to her hometown an hour outside of Anchorage. And gave birth in a brand new hospital with her long time doctor with her family around and in the same town where her other 4 kids were born. We can question judgement all we went. But in the end of it all, she made the right one.

Women are 70 percent more likely to die in childbirth in America than in Europe and the US ranks near the bottom of developed nations in infant survival.

It probably has to do with nurses who think like Mrs.M wind up making bad decisions that cost thousands of babies their lives. Kudos to the governor of Alaska making the right choice.

You can't just look at the "statistics". Consider that the US counts stillbirths with no regard for size or maturity in the mortality rate. It's also well known that minorities make up a large portion of that rate, which is often no fault of the neonatal care received but rather damage that was done during the pregnancy due to a lack of care.

LOL Your ignorance of the matter is showing!

Quote:
Still, a Sacramento, Calif., obstetrician who is active in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said when a pregnant woman's water breaks, she should go right to the hospital because of the risk of infection. That's true even if the amniotic fluid simply leaks out, said Dr. Laurie Gregg.

"To us, leaking and broken, we are talking the same thing. We are talking doctor-speak," Gregg said.

Some airlines have policies against pregnant women onboard during the last four weeks of pregnancy, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises against flying after 36 weeks.

This was going to be Palin's last flight anyway, her doctor said.

Alaska Airlines has no such rule and leaves the decision to the woman and her doctor, said spokeswoman Caroline Boren. Palin was very pleasant to the gate agents and flight attendants, as always, Boren said.

So clearly she made the wrong decision; she shouldn't have headed back to Alaska, she should have been looking to get to Paris right?

And that had what, precisely, to do with the manner of the child's birth?

Re: Coolest Governor Ever!

I may be wrong but usually Down syndrome is detected within the first tri-mester of the pregnancy. She should have know the problems ahead, not instead been "very surprised" by it.

Did you... uh.... read the article?

Quote:
Trig arrived about a month early and has Down syndrome, the governor confirmed. Testing during early pregnancy revealed the condition. Palin said she was sad at first but they now feel blessed that God chose them. The couple has lots of family support, she said.
Either way, it has jack shit to do with her flying home to Alaska to deliver.
