You know Traveler, if it wasnt for this Texas thing, if you got to know Palin on the issues. You would see that she really is a good conservative Republican. Pro-Life, Pro-gun, tough on spending. Young, pretty, down to Earth, articulate likable person. And this is coming from me, a liberal. But liberals in Alaska are generally pro-ANWR and guns.

As for the Texas oil workers, I should also throw in the folks from Oklahoma, they didnt perform as promised by and large. But I have said many times before, when it comes to someone from the lower 48, Alaska isnt for everyone. I am bred and born here, dont know any different. So for me the lifestyle is normal, but I also have hired a guy who was super gung ho and from NYC. He was back in Manhattan within 72 hours.
I dont know how for the life of me you folks deal with the flatness and heat.

She, kudos to her had a child when the child was possibly suffering with DS.

However you are right about certain Texan "oilers". Some can't hack it the same way some just can't hack our state at all. They stroll in, bring in their warped and mentally unstable ways, try and enforce it on others and then pig off when they realise we won't tolerate it.

I probably may see a few things the same way as Palin but on an issue as important as child birth i think she made a mistake to go home.

Well again, I would ask you to have some empathy and look at it from an Alaskan perspective. I know it is slightly different. But imagine how popular Laura Bush or in her much younger days Kay Bailey Hutchison would have been among Texans of both parties if she went into labor while doing something in say Oklahoma or Arkansas or hell California is a better example. And being the strong female types they are said, hell if Im gonna have a kid outside of my home state! Get me back to Texas. That person I would venture a guess from the reaction of lots of Alaskans would, hell yeah. Now that is patriotism, just on a statehood level.

I can see the strong woman argument but with the Bush twins etc there were no problems, like the month premature and stuff.

For a start, if folks wanna have a birth in their home town area they generally stay home after a certain time just in case.

Granted his time the arrival was early, but that in itself should be cause enough to ditch other plans and go to a more immediete solution no?

Also if Laura's water had broken in say Oklahoma dependant on where in the state it may have been faster to drive back to Texas than say a hospital in a big city there.

Forgive me, I know I am the backward one here, but the concept of driving out of state is quite foreign to me. I have been down and back the Al-Can Highway once only. Air travel is much more common in Alaska. To the point where the people living in a town 18miles from me fly into my village to go grocery shopping. The students of South Naknek fly back and forth from school daily due to no road access.

Speaking of which, I am watching a show on Discovery called the "Alaska Experiment" where they must find the dumbest examples of the lower 48ers and send them up here to attempt to live off the land in some form. Well the gal from Kansas City hasnt made it on the hike to the cabin they are supposed to stay in. She is already crying. It isnt 15minutes into the damn series.

I gotta say, from watching the discovery channel, from an Alaskan standpoint, Alaska week kinda sucks to this point. I am sure I would have heard if the Mythbusters were here to film. So I dont think they are doing an Alaskan mythbusters. Which could be a great episode.

Si Modo, I respect your views, even though I might disagree with them occassionally. But Northern Exposure is pure Hollywood. Please dont get me started about that one, especially since it was filmed in Washington. The moose that seemed to be the icon of that show was a Shiras moose. Not a species found within a thousand miles of the Alaskan Moose.

Its sort of a hold you have/an issue to your advantage, if and when we start drilling there it sure will take away a lot of attention/money/leverage your state may currently be benefitting from wouldn't it?

Yeah i'll bet, some of my family have property in and around WA state (and some of the surrounding Islands) and its always in the middle of nowhere.
