I will be willing to bet all that she wasn't traveling with a physician or the article would have mentioned it. Since she didn't tell the airline of her advanced pregnancy, they obviously didn't check with the other passengers to see if there was a physician on board that would be able to help her in the case of an emergency.

As for modern medicine, I agree that we've made many advances but women giving birth and then continuing with their jobs as few days later was not unheard of even a few generations ago. It was done out of necessity though and mortality rate was much higher. After my C-Section of a 9 lb. 12 oz baby, I was making my bed while still in the hospital because I felt fine. (I got in trouble with the nurses though!) The day I went into labor with my second child, I was mowing the lawn.

I'm not denying that everything turned out well for the governor but as a nurse, I know that she took a risk and from the source I posted, there are doctors that agree. I just can't understand how y'all can't comprehend that!
Now lets look at the article you quoted so conveniently.

Quote:
Palin said she felt fine but had leaked amniotic fluid and also felt some contractions that seemed different from the false labor she had been having for months.

"I said I am going to stay for the day. I have a speech I was determined to give," Palin said. She gave the luncheon keynote address for the energy conference.

Palin kept in close contact with Baldwin-Johnson. The contractions slowed to one or two an hour, "which is not active labor," the doctor said.

"Things were already settling down when she talked to me," Baldwin-Johnson said. Palin did not ask for a medical OK to fly, the doctor said.

"I don't think it was unreasonable for her to continue to travel back," Baldwin-Johnson said.

So the Palins flew on Alaska Airlines from Dallas to Anchorage, stopping in Seattle and checking with the doctor along the way.

"I am not a glutton for pain and punishment. I would have never wanted to travel had I been fully engaged in labor," Palin said. After four kids, the governor said, she knew what labor felt like, and she wasn't in labor...
Alaska Airlines has no such rule and leaves the decision to the woman and her doctor, said spokeswoman Caroline Boren. Palin was very pleasant to the gate agents and flight attendants, as always, Boren said.

"The stage of her pregnancy was not apparent by observation. She did not show any signs of distress," Boren said.

Palin never got big with this pregnancy. She said she didn't try to hide it but didn't feel a need to alert the airline, either.
Now all of this can go back and forth for a long time. I am willing to do that if you like. But as I told Traveler, and I think he is somewhat converted. If this wasnt the first news and didnt have a personal experience relating to something like this, then I bet you would admire Sarah.
What a breath of fresh air she has given to Alaskans.

Hmm learn something new everyday. Thanks for sharing.
Out where I am it has curtailed off a little the last few years. Apparently its intensity is somewhat cyclical. Also, we have not had as many clear nights the last two winters. Tons of snow.
Fairbanks is the best city in the world to see them as far as I know. I went to college there. The NL is the one nice thing about winter there. Summers are amazing. +80, sunny and it never gets dark.
Winter is flat out depressing. -40 and dark. For months at a time.

LOL yeah. Its out of season now, but a nice touch for the holidays.
For a long time when I was a kid, a photo cut out of the ADN was on the fridge. It had a moose with larger antlers than buzzwinkle and was fighting a childs swing set in somebodies back yard.
Also, you might like this one. The premier of "running of the reindeer" Notice just how fast a few of them are darting through the crowd and just how bad one of those antlers would hurt.

I do understand that she was in contact with her doctor, however, a phone call doesn't minimize the risk of infection or the risk of going into full labor while in the air and no matter what anyone says, I think it was foolish of her. Maybe if I didn't have the medical knowledge, I would take what she did as nonchalantly as the rest of you but sorry, I agree with what the other doctor quoted in the article said, as would most healthcare professionals.

I didn't see it in 1969 but did see it about 12 years or so ago while standing in front of my sister's house. I didn't realize what it was until the next day when I read about it in the newspaper. Of course, it wasn't the spectacular show that y'all get but rather a beautiful pink and purple northern sky. It was almost eerie to watch it since I had no inkling as to what it was!

I am glad you were able to see them. I think lots of AKans take them for granted, the scenery as well. Though about 10 years ago, I was at my cabin and some friends and I were having a fire out on the lake. The lights came out amazing. Then in the back ground probably several miles away you could clearly hear wolves howling. It just made me shiver thinking about it. eerie is a good adjective. What I really like is when the reflection makes the snow look green. Like the biggest green flo light in the world.
