Kerry rival misses being on ballot by 30 signatures

Ahhh, The Massachusetts GOP, the three stooges of politics.

Quote:
In a major embarrassment to Republican leaders in Massachusetts and in the US Senate, Jim Ogonowski, the party's anointed candidate to challenge Democratic Senator John F. Kerry, failed by a razor-thin margin today to qualify for the GOP primary ballot.

With Ogonowski's stunning blunder, the only GOP name on the primary ballot will be Jeff Beatty, a little-known security expert from Harwich.

According to Secretary of State William F. Galvin's office, Ogonowski's campaign delivered just 9,970 certified voter signatures to its election division today just before the final deadline, 30 short of the 10,000 he needed.

Jim Ogonowski, a retired Air Force Colonel and brother of a 9/11 pilot, considered to be the GOP's best hope against John Kerry, will not appear on the ballot, so a complete unknown will run unopposed for GOP Senate nomination.

Kerry can breathe a sigh of relief.

Not that it matters, the people of MA would never elect a legislator without a "D" next to thier name anyway. If anyone are stooges, it's the MA voters - as is the case with any partisan state.

Maybe, but Ogonowski was a pretty good candidate, who probably could have made it close, and might have pulled it off, Mass voters are funny that way, which is why we've had so many Republican governors. Plus Kerry might be damaged goods this time around, the right guy could have given him a run for his money. But this guy from Harwich probably isn't the right guy.

Ogonowski came pretty close to beating Niki Tsongas.
He comes across a lot better than Kerry in the media.

Nah even he was a good 20 points down to Kerry, Kerry will win, no doubt, but then again while you got him in again you're gonna lose Teddy soon....

I kinda wonder why people love their local politicians so much. I can't stand Reid and Gibbons and won't be voting for them when their time comes. What does Kerry offer to the people of Mass? On the national stage he proved to be an embarrassment. The only thing I can see is that the opposition is usually worse. I hope a native from the state can enlighten me.

The Mass GOP is kind of a joke.
We once had the GOP go through 3 gubernatorial candidates, after the nomination.
The party nominated a candidate, who had to withdraw because of embarrassing news, the leadership picked another candidate, who had to withdraw a few weeks later when his secretary revealed that he liked to "be naked" while he worked in his downtown office.
The third candidate, who only had about a month to campaign, got creamed in the general.

When Gerry Studds admitted he was gay and had sex with a 16 year old page boy, the GOP nominated a guy to run against him who was so bad that Studds still got 70% of the vote. Imagine how bad a candidate has to be to lose by a landslide to someone who admits having sex with a 16 year old boy.
Imagine a candidate whose whole stump speech consisted of denouncing the other candidate as a "dirty little faggot", and nothing else.

This latest embarrassment, coming up 30 signatures short, for the candidate selected by the state party leadership and the RNC senatorial campaign leadership just illustrates the depth of the incompetence that permeates the Republican party in Massachusetts.

We had an immensely popular GOP state Treasurer named Joe Malone, who was considered to be unstoppable in the next gubernatorial election, he left office to prepare for his run for governor, and the Democrat who replaced him discovered that there was millions of dollars of lottery scratch tickets missing from the inventory at the state lottery, which is run by the treasurers office, a short investigation showed that while Joe Malone was as honest as the day is long, his friends and family that he got jobs for at the lottery commission, would fill their pockets with lottery tickets on the way home each night. Making him look like the biggest sucker in the world, and destroying his credibility, he became the honest guy who was completely incompetent.

This goes way back to when the GOP actually had a majority in the state legislature, back in the '40s, they put ultra conservative issues on the ballot, like a total ban on all abortions, the increased voter turnout by people opposed to these issues was so high that it swept the GOP out of Mass state government, never to return in more than token numbers.
