Superintendent proposes making 2 public schools Spanish language

One of the results of illegal immigration and not demanding anyone who comes here from another country to assimilate.

Charlotte Local News | Charlotte Observer
Thirteen schools would lose magnet programs.

Collinswood and Oaklawn elementaries would become K-8 Spanish-language schools.

You're gonna see more of these dual-language schools because of globalization anyhow. We have some schools here who teach their curriculum in English, German or Arabic too. As long as they also teach Dutch I don't have a problem with it.

Multiculturalism fails. The question is whether forcing schools to teach their curriculum in a certain language is a solution. I think people should be free to choose the school they want anyhow.

Multiculturalism fails. The question is whether forcing schools to teach their curriculum in a certain language really helps. I think people should be free to choose the school they want.
sure and where you are, I agree that that might be the way to go, here , not so much....

the melting pot concept made this country what it became.

the elderly I'll cut a little slack for on the language front but the immigrants must assimilate and its mainly the illegals that resist. allowing them to resist is a terrible idea.

Re: Superintendent proposes making 2 public schools Spanish language

So long as they have they have comprehensive English classes to get them speaking the language as quickly as possible, I don't see a problem. If they can't speak English, they can't learn in English. Forcing them to sink or swim based solely on their language ability is stupid and harmful to society in the long run.

1 + 1 = 2 in Spanish too.

I don't know, on the one hand you have a professional educator who is familiar with the district, on the other hand you have right wing reactionaries trying to make it an election issue.

How can you tell what's best for the kids?

That is easy - Ask the parents.

Non English speakers earn far less money than English speakers. Being a big nanny state liberal I'd think you would want them to earn more? Then you can extract more of their wages via income redistribution.

And people who have no education because they couldn't learn because they didn't speak the language well enough earn even less.

No one is suggesting that they not learn English. They are only suggesting that they get some basic skill training in Spanish.

My education was entirely in English, but just because I'm in Ecuador right now doesn't mean I have to go back to the 3rd grade to relearn everything in Spanish.

Are you planning on living in Ecuador permanently? If so, maybe going to school to brush up on Spanish is a good idea. Do you think they'll teach the class in English?

Missed the point, did you?

At any rate, I speak Spanish at a functionally fluent level. However, since you are apparently curious, throughout Latin America, and I imagine the world, there are english schools, bilingual schools, etc.

However, the point that you ignored, I presume because it is inconvenient, is that basic stuff like simple mathematics does not change from language to language (indeed, there are those who would argue that mathematics is its own language) and if someone is better equipped to learn those things in Spanish then they should be taught in Spanish.

In my first post, if you bothered reading it, I emphasized the importance of having a good English program in these schools as well.

I understood your post. My point is this - if you are going to live in the USA permanently you need to learn ENGLISH. The most effective means of learning any language is total immersion.

Yes, if your only goal is to learn English.

But if your goal is to learn other basic subjects that they teach in elementary school, then immersion will completely fuck you.

Unless, of course, your interest is in creating a host of little brown English speakers with no marketable skills, thus forcing them into low paying service sector jobs to wait hand and foot upon those who were allowed to learn.

Much depends on the age of the students. In this case we are discussing K-8 kids. Study after study shows that this age group does better with English only instruction. SO please explain to me how teaching K-8 students English is going to "Completely Fuck you".
