At what point do Tax payers say stop
Gov. Deval Patrick’s free wheels for welfare recipients program is revving up despite the stalled economy, as the keys to donated cars loaded with state-funded insurance, repairs and even AAA membership are handed out to get them to work. But if they "loose" the job, don't worry just keep the car and the perks. And I guess they will need a gas card too.

Re: At what point do Tax payers say stop
According to the link 20% of the people in the program went back on welfare, which means that 80% are working and either off welfare or get reduced benefits and the program has paid for itself out of these savings.
Anyway, its a small program, and whether it works or not, it provides data on whether this idea works. If giving people a car actually gets 80% of the people off welfare, that's a pretty good program.

Re: At what point do Tax payers say stop
Have you actually been in public housing? It's not exactly a 3-story mansion with an an indoor pool and free maid service. Maybe free cars are taking it too far, but if it's getting 80% of the people in the program off welfare, then it must be a good idea. I also agree with the other guy in saying that if that person loses the job, they should be required to give back the car, unless there are extenuating circumstances (such as a downsizing) that got that person fired.

Re: At what point do Tax payers say stop
My car is getting kind of old may have to buy a new one soon or I could just quit my job and let Uncle Sam buy me one, sounds like a win win to me. Seriously this sounds like a good idea that is doomed to fail. What most people do not understand these entitlement programs sound good on paper but do not pay off in the real world. I am from a poor community and what is suppose to be a helping hand up will be used to scam the man by most of the people who sign up. I wish they would keep a record of how many of these cars will be used to commit crimes. I am sure that will be swept under the rug. I agree people need help not hand outs. As a single woman I have always had to buy my own car so I could work they have always been old used cars which I paid for with my own money which I went out and got a job to pay for.

Re: At what point do Tax payers say stop
Well not really true, in my town the housing authority recently bought a couple of luxury apartment complexes with pools and gyms and told all the current residents they had to move, the complex was being turned into public housing.
