Texas Governor

The Texas Republican primary will decide who the new governor will be. If Kay Bailey Huchison wins then she is the new governor. If Perry(Governor Hair) wins the primary then Texas will have a Democratic governor. Perry was gifted the last election due to a crowded field, a weak Democratic canidate and the Texas constitution (no runoff). It will not happen again. It's a win/win for Texas Democrats, either we'll get a Democratic governor or we will at the least competent state government.

The Republican primary looks to be a nasty one. Can't wait. I'm no fan of Kay Bailey, but I think she has been underestimated. If McCain picked her the election would've been much closer.

Re: Texas Governor

I was under the impression Perry was popular in Texas.

Re: Texas Governor

Not really. I think a lot of Republicans are sick of him. He's basically government to the highest bidder. He only won 39% of the vote against very weak opposition. The Dem canidate was very weak, there was an independent Rep who got 18%, a very weak Dem got 29% and Kinky Freidman got 12%. He's only popular with some of the tough talking far right but plenty of Republicans don't care for him. I think the primary battle will cut him to shreds. Even in a red state like Texas large elections are won in the middle. He has almost no appeal to the moderates. Kay Bailey has lots of moderate appeal. She does a lot of Gramstanding, but the Reps and right leaning moderates won't hold that against her.

On the other hand if by some miracle he should win the nomination, he'll lose the general. You can't even win in Texas with only the white conservative vote. He'll get almost no Hispanic vote, no Black vote, and I don't think he'll do well with women, outside of hardcare conservatives. Personally, I think the primary will be the most interesting one we've had in decades. It is very hard for me to believe that Hutchison would lose in the general, she might, but it would be very close. If she wins the primary and loses the general, it'll be because of her vote for Sotomayer. Texas has a large Hispanic population that went over 50% for Bush. But the Dems are making big inroads into that vote. It could be a factor. I'm a Dem, but I'm also an observer. At this point I think she has the best chance to win.

Regardless of who the GOP nominee turns out to be, I wouldn't count on a democrat winning the governorship in Texas, in a mid-term election, in a year more likely than not, not to be favoring democrats nationally.

Re: Texas Governor

The last thing Texas needs is more Perry. No state needs a governor willing to sacrifice its citizens because he can't perform a 15 second google search. Oh the shame to have your governor go on TV to tell the world that Texas is the only state in the Union that retained its right to suceede when it joined.

Oh the shame of having a governor refuse federal stimulus money only to take out a loan a few months later for the same intended purpose.

Texas being a red state is a fairly new phenomenon. Hard times have a way of turning us back blue.

One last thing, I've met Kinky, he's a super cool dude. But he is the embodiment of every Texan cliche that exists, it's hard getting people to take us seriously as it is.

It's hard for me to believe that most Americans don't respect and/or fear Texans. Of course, the flyover crowd only respects Socialist Shills, so that closed minded minority will never take Texas serious.

I find that common among fellow Texans. I'm sure there are lots of things that are hard for you to believe, and yet, they're still true.

Again, when we elect a man who goes on national TV quoting urban legends as his justification for sacrificing his citizens, why should people take us seriously? And if we elect a man, kind-hearted and hard-working as he may be, who smokes cigars during his news interviews and has a penchant for quoting Willie Nelson, why would people be more inclined to take us seriously then?

I'm with you, people should take Texas and Texans seriously, but old cliches run deep and aren't easily forgotten. Especially when people persist with their "Fuck y'all, I'm from Texas" attitudes.

Why would anyone, other than morons, 'fear' Texans?

Do you 'fear' North Dakotans? If not, why not?

If by 'fear', he really meant 'point and laugh at, uproariously, and then fall over, holding one's sides', then yes, I could see the point.

Because they're armed to the teeth with no respect for your perceived right to take their property.

Lemme check.

Eh. Nope. My fear-oh-meter isn't registering a very high score.

I've got a pretty pearl-handled pistol in my panty drawer, are you skeered yet?
