Governor Paterson (d), seeking to closing a $3.2 billion deficit, is seeking the authority to unilaterally slash budget expenditures mid-year.

You know, I'd almost have to respect his sudden bout of fiscal responsibility if not for his 12 years as Senate minority leader contributing to the problem.

The monumental failure of liberal policies is on full display, first in California, and now NY, soon to be nationwide if they are not stopped. It would almost be comical if I didn't have to buy a new license plate in April.

Maybe he did contribute to the problem. That shouldn't preclude him from being able to try to fix it. In fact, I think it's laudable.

And the fact that he wasn't elected, as the one lawmaker seemed to make an issue of, means absolutely nothing...

More likely, don't support giving a complete idiot, and hopeless partisan power to unilaterally decide where to cut (and more importantly politically were NOT to cut). How about a nice, simple, cross the board equal cut to all programs sufficient to close the gap, with any adjustments to that requiring the normal legislative process.

Paterson is the only new york politician of either party who has even come close to being honest about the state's fiscal condition and what it will take to get where we need to be. As for "liberal policies", that's just nonsense. The NY state senate has been controlled by republicans for all my life and they've had enough governors to have controlled spending if they had ever possessed such a desire. As in the federal government the truth is that no politician from either party has ever been fiscally conservative except when they were in the minority and could not give the money to their own friends.

He might be honest about the short term deficits, but I haven't heard much about reforming what got us into this mess.

So long as the Assembly is dominated by the City, and has veto power in the 3 man budget process, no one is able to to be fiscally responsible and expect to get reelected.
