    Quit school? Mandatory military service!

A Louisiana Democrat thinks that if you quit school (in Louisiana), you should be required to serve two years in the military! Why not focus on why these people are dropping out of school and do something about that instead?

I'm sure the military is thrilled at the idea of a flood of high school drop outs joining up.

Gee, if they can be required to go to the military, why can't the just be required to stay in school until they are 18?

Why not keep all options on the table?

I like the idea of a public service obligation (not necessarily military) for all citizens.

At least then our resident military haters wouldn't be lying when they say that the military is made up of dropouts and ne'er-do-wells.

For all citizens is completely different from this idea. Military service would be used as a punishment for certain individuals.

And not all people drop out of school simply because they are losers or delinquents.

Public service should be voluntary, IMO, with exceptions, of course, for those who are court-ordered to do community service.

Ah, I now understand the secret intention of this bill!

The military doesn't want them. In general, nobody wants them.

I don't think punishment is the idea; it's to guide them to becoming disciplined, productive and contributing members of society.

That being said, I don't favor limiting it to high school dropouts.

    You mean punishment?

Don't let Cari hear you say that.

In any event, I suppose we disagree on whether public service should be voluntary.

Well, they could do what they do in Texas to keep dropout rates low, list dropouts as "home schooled".

If someone dropped out of school, couldn't they just get their GED to avoid military service?

"Hmm...do I want to spend a Saturday morning taking the easiest test known to man, or spend two mandatory years in the military?"

Is it just for people who quit, or for people who don't get their diploma? In TX you're only legally required to go to school until age 17.

And for other states, most kids turn 18 before graduation.
