A Louisiana Democrat thinks that if you quit school (in Louisiana), you should be required to serve two years in the military! Why not focus on why these people are dropping out of school and do something about that instead?

Wow, what an incredibly horrible idea.
Well that's really fuckin' stupid.
First they came for the mimes, and I did not speak out, because I was a mime.
I'm sure the military is thrilled at the idea of a flood of high school drop outs joining up.
"Finding the occasional straw of truth awash in a great ocean of confusion and bamboozle requires intelligence, vigilance, dedication and courage. But if we don't practice these tough habits of thought, we cannot hope to solve the truly serious problems that face us -- and we risk becoming a nation of suckers, up for grabs by the next charlatan who comes along." -Carl Sagan

Gee, if they can be required to go to the military, why can't the just be required to stay in school until they are 18?![]()

The military doesn't want them. In general, nobody wants them.
I don't think punishment is the idea; it's to guide them to becoming disciplined, productive and contributing members of society.
That being said, I don't favor limiting it to high school dropouts.
You mean punishment?
Don't let Cari hear you say that.
In any event, I suppose we disagree on whether public service should be voluntary.![]()
Well, they could do what they do in Texas to keep dropout rates low, list dropouts as "home schooled".
If someone dropped out of school, couldn't they just get their GED to avoid military service?
"Hmm...do I want to spend a Saturday morning taking the easiest test known to man, or spend two mandatory years in the military?"
