Florida governor signs welfare drug-screen measure - CNNSaying it is "unfair for Florida taxpayers to subsidize drug addiction," Gov. Rick Scott on Tuesday signed legislation requiring adults applying for welfare assistance to undergo drug screening.
"It's the right thing for taxpayers," Scott said after signing the measure. "It's the right thing for citizens of this state that need public assistance. We don't want to waste tax dollars. And also, we want to give people an incentive to not use drugs."
Under the law, which takes effect on July 1, the Florida Department of Children and Family Services will be required to conduct the drug tests on adults applying to the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. The aid recipients would be responsible for the cost of the screening, which they would recoup in their assistance if they qualify. Those who fail the required drug testing may designate another individual to receive the benefits on behalf of their children.
I'm all for this and kudos to the state of Florida for having the cojones to do it. Now all states should follow suit.

I'll support this the moment we support drug testing for everyone else taking a government handout. In other words, I'll accept this (with some reservations on the implications of this of course) the moment we accept equal treatment for anyone needing government dollars. Until then, until everyone taking government dollars is treated equally, you guys are just supporting another step in the political game of class warfare.

"Every time something really bad happens, people cry out for safety, and the government answers by taking rights away from good people.” - Penn Jillette amazingly enough, and I agree.

Sounds like a violation of the 4th amendment to me.

"To be governed is to be watched, inspected, spied upon, directed, law-driven, numbered, regulated, enrolled, indoctrinated, preached at, controlled, checked, estimated, valued, censured, commanded, by creatures who have neither the right nor the wisdom nor the virtue to do so." Honestly, this is just stupidity.
There's a monumental difference between receiving money from the government for legitimate services, etc. and being dependent on the government. I have numerous contracts with various local, state, and federal governments to provide service and supplies to laboratories predominately in the NYC area. I'm providing a service and being paid to do so. What I do with that payment is none of any government's business, provided I'm not breaking any laws.
These people are generously being given money so they can purchase basic necessities and it's perfectly reasonably for our government to expect they actually use it for basic necessities and not illegal drugs.

So, Florida sucks. Collecting evidence on people with no warrant and forcing people to provide evidence against themselves isn't cool.
As some of the bills opponents state : It's downright unconstitutional.
Strip anyone convicted even of a misdemeanor they've been to court and found guilty. Needing assistance is not evidence of a crime.
More freedom lost to the state.
This stinks like hell of corruption as well:
"Controversy over the measure was heightened by Scott's past association with a company he co-founded that operates walk-in urgent care clinics in Florida and counts drug screening among the services it provides."
