    Florida bad at math

so 2% of those tested under a new law requiring drug testing before receiving temporary assistance benefits have been found to be using drugs according to the test.

    1,000 people
Tested at a cost of $30.00-35.00 each is an average of $32.50 per test.
98% aren't doing drugs so Florida picks up the tab for a grand total of $31,850.00

The 20 people who will be denied $233 in benefits a month saves the state $4660.00 in benefits they don't have to pay out.

But testing cost $31,850.00 minus the saving of $4,660.00 in benefits denied has a total cost $27,190.00 .

The state of Florida loses $27,190.00 per 1000 people tested.

Way to go Florida...nothing like improving confidence in the government and welfare system by increasing the cost to the public.

It's such a shame the authoritarian goons who force people to submit to their will are so bad at math.

Hold on, 98% don't use drugs? Something doesn't add up, because we know that most people on assistance are on drugs. Perhaps they need to administer more accurate (and therefore, more expensive) drug tests.

All kidding aside, I'm sure some people are faking the test somehow.. but damn, that is just stupid all around.

Well, the idea was that people on welfare use a lot more drugs than people not on welfare.
What the tests revealed was that people without a lot of money, can't afford to buy drugs.

I still contend that if we drug tested everyone on Wall Street getting their hand out (or anyone else that got their bailout) it would be a good deal more than 2% that failed.

    Re: Florida bad at math

If they tested all 53,000 families each month they'd have to "save" money by finding 7,393 druggies among the applicant just to break even on testing expenses.

There would have to be over half again as many druggies among the applicants as there is among the general population of Florida just to break even on testing expenses.

The voters of Florida have been bamboozled by politicos claiming to be tough on druggies.

It's just a coincidence the governor of Florida co-founded a firm that runs walk-in clinics that do drug testing.

Here are the problems with your outrage:

    - It's not authoritarian. It would be if the government was testing random citizens, but since these are citizens on the government dole, they fall under pretty much any rules the government wants in order to get the free money.

    - Testing 1000 people and then extrapolating that to all of the people on welfare in Florida is an erroneous methodology. In other words, for the article -- and several posters on here -- to claim that "the issue is settled, people on welfare all overwhelmingly clean" based on this is specious. In fact, if I told you that only 2% of ALL people were [EDIT: Sorry, wrote the opposite of what I meant] using drugs, you'd scoff, right? So is it now the claim of people on here that people on welfare use FEWER drugs than the general populace? That would be hilarious. I'd be willing to lay money down on it.

    - You're complaining about $32,000? Really? Could we instead complain about the billions being spent on social services?

How many people were discouranged from applying for benifits because they were on drugs.

I.E., did applications drop month over month since the bill was passed.
“Are vital U.S. interests more imperiled by what happens in Iraq where were have 50,000 troops, or Afghanistan where we have 100,000, or South Korea where we have 28,000 -- or by what is happening on our border with Mexico?...What does it profit America if we save Anbar and lose Arizona?”

No data on that, it's certainly a valid point but do you imagine our economy has benefited enough from Obama's economic genius to make a meaningful measure of how many people aren't applying for assistance?
