My first reaction when I read about it was how silly. But now I can see where it would really come in handy when parallel parking, at least until all cars can park themselves.
As John Drake pointed out, a video cam is dirt cheap these days.

I think the vehicle was an Equinox, but I'm not sure.
All good socialists have villas in Southern France. That's not the point.
From your description I see your problem, but I still can't see why it couldn't be easily fixed by just reversing the lens.
You know who might REALLY like it would be truckers, but then again most of them I know take great pride in backing down 12 foot alleys from 45degree angles with exactly 18 inches on each side, and all from one cursory glance at the mirrors.
In re to this, has anyone ever seen the special rear view mirror you could buy from J C Whitney that went ALL THE WAY ACROSS, the front windshield? It was like six mirrors set at angles so as to give you this super panoramic rear view. I'm not kidding, I had one but never put it on and lost it later..doesn't seem they're selling it anymore for some reason. I have found this, and I guess it's been superseded, but it just doesn't seem the same

While I can see why it would be nice for all cars to have these fitted making it law is going a bit far.
I can see a clear reason for things like seat belts but back-up cameras shouldn't be needed for people to be able to reverse safely as if you can't reverse then you're either a rubbish driver or have a car with shockingly bad rear visibility and that's surely a design issue.
When life takes you to the end of the road, kick it into four wheel drive and make your own.

I ♣ Ideologues!
Not the worst idea government has come up with, seems today's drivers need all the help they can get. My take on all of this.

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Benjamin Franklin
"Every time something really bad happens, people cry out for safety, and the government answers by taking rights away from good people.” - Penn Jillette amazingly enough, and I agree.
