Property taxes are one of the most heinous taxes of all. You never really own anything. If you don't continually and perpetually pay the tax, the government will confiscate your property.

This is interesting because its the first time a state has proposed getting rid of property taxes. Apparently the govt has a surplus, and the property tax system is messed up. But 70% want to keep it? We have it in florida too, and its wrong. Your neighbor will pay more taxes because the market says their house is worth more, maybe they have a pool. But they dont get any more services. And they arent actually making money off the house. Its not like income. And if you dont pay it, the govt takes your house.

“I think North Dakotans understand that government isn’t free,” said Andy Peterson, president of the North Dakota Chamber of Commerce and a spokesman for the Keep it Local coalition, which opposed Measure 2.
Voters weren’t persuaded that the state’s coffers were flush enough with oil money or other revenues to discard the property tax, he said, a central claim of the Measure 2 backers, Empower the Taxpayer.
“The citizens didn’t buy that argument,” Peterson said. They didn’t want to sacrifice local government and they didn’t want to sacrifice their schools.”

ahoy Jviehe,
if ye pay more in taxes, that doesn't necessarily mean that ye, personally, get to have more services. it doesn't work that way, matey.
and the worth 'o yer home actually functions alot like income. it increases yer net worth, makes borrowin' easier (if yer house isn't insanely overleveraged)...it does all sorts 'o things.
i found the results show that the folks in ND just be practical people.

Well yeah. I have said that a few times here on this forum. We in essence lease our land from state gov't. If you don't make your lease payment, they confiscate your property that you bought and paid for. You really don't own real estate, those things that don't wear out like cars, clothing and widgets.
We are just under the illusion that we actually own our homes and the land we paid for. An entity known as gov't actually owns it. And america is based upon private ownership? Excuse me as I roll on my floor laughing my ass off.
As long as the gov't confiscates for not making tax payments, there is no private ownership of property. Not actually.
