New threads

Question: is there any way to have threads that have new posts that I haven't read carry over from one login to the next?

Re: New threads

Has it always been the current way or did it just change?

Re: New threads

I believe that it's always been that way. "New posts" is tracked by a cookie that corresponds to your login time. Unless vBulletin has some kind of setting that tracks which post each user has and hasn't seen, this wouldn't be possible (and, if it were, it would likely take up a lot of space in the database because you would need an entry for the number of posters times the number of threads to say poster X looked at thread Y at time T).

Re: New threads

Erm... don't understand the tech talk. All I know is that on another Vb board I can leave/log out whatever and when I come back it still has unread threads from the last time. *shrug*

What I do is simply use the user control panel - in my case, it seems to automatically subscribe me to threads I've posted in. I just go by the last poster and date and keep track of things that way ...

But I dont think there would be any way for it to show up as a "new" post, although I think it would still show as "not replied to" ... I think the reason it wouldn't show up as a new post is that the forum cookie/variable that deals with new posts probably gets reset after the first time you log in to the CPanel (or site).

If you already knew this, my apologies.

Just click on "view all subscribed threads" in the cpanel - I think that should do it for this forum.

Re: New threads

I find the same thing sometimes too Donkey. I rely pretty much exclusively on the "new posts" link, and occasionally if I log in and check some messages then log out for a bit, when I log back in the threads that I haven't yet looked at have gone, and I have to go into the actual Forums manually. It doesn't really bother me though.

Do they show up if you click "view all subscribed threads"?

Of course, I am not sure if everyone is automatically subscribed to the threads they post in ...

Re: New threads

There are different settings available, but some aren't chosen due to the extra load it can place on the server. Some of these settings can be changed and may be in the future. I am kind of waiting for a little while to see how some recent changes impact server load.

Re: New threads

Is this the problem that has come about that I mentioned in the other thread? I know it is a cookie problem. It has to be.

Until you implemented the new changes, if I clicked on a thread I had previously been involved in or viewed, it would take me to the LAST page I looked at the last time I opened that thread.

Now it either takes me to page one or a random page every single time. (Example: In one 13-page thread, it opens to page 4 EVERY TIME I click on the thread. ALWAYS.)

It IS annoying to me. I hope that you are able to have you web service/ Web techs fix it. It is time consuming and a pain to fish through them each time. No, I am not kidding. Some of these threads have 20 pages...and I either have to remember where I was and click to that page, or just fish through it to find my place. Try doing that with 20+ threads. Yuk.

I'd much rather it be as it was...so that I do not have to fish through threads to find the last page I looked at.

I really hope you guys will have it corrected.

I'm a paid member, so I get to see functions that non-members don't. I'd totally recommend paying, as it's very cheap and helps out the crew who do a great job of putting up with all of our garbage on here, and keeping the site running. You get to see all of the new posts in one area, and is so much easier.
