What seems to be the problem here? Was it, quoting Pramjockey, , or was the reason the thread was removed something else entirely?

Maybe Crystal will have an explanation, eh?

Maybe they are still working on that certificate error thingy.

Crystal, did Matt or DrGoodTrips look at it yet?
There is no conspiracy as Gem is suggesting. The ONLY reason the thread was deleted was in response to this thread. I also reported the post I believe to be causing the problem to draw the attention of the other mods. The ONLY reason it has not been reopened is because I have yet to recieve any kind of response from anyone with more computer knowledge, actually I haven't received a response from anyone at all regarding the best route to take to reopen the thread. Is it best to leave the entire thread deleted or can I simply delete what I believe to be the offending post and reopen the thread? That's all I need to know.

Re: Certificate error

We will let you all know what we conclude is the issue and what will be done about it. Our precautions have more to do with the potential of damage to your computers.

Gem, please desist with mod conspiracy claims and assume the million more plausible and fair explanations. Clearly a lot more controversial claims get posted on this site than found in that thread. If computers got damaged, I'm sure conspiracy claims would fly on that too. Simply, we care about the site's physical integrity and everyone's computers , including our own, given the garbage people can pick up on the Internet and pass here through links, etc, without any ill intents, never mind those who do. It has happened before with spam and links and we constantly clean it out before anyone ever sees it.

I'm not claiming there were any actual mod conspiracies happening hear. But I have seen it happen before in other forums- especially when a post threatens or deeply offends the beliefs of a certain moderator or group of moderators. Seeing something happen here that appeared quite similar to situations I've seen or encountered in other forums is what gave rise to my suspicions in this case.
That is all.

Re: Certificate error

A security error - does not necessarily mean any harm was done.
What interest me is how did you get the certificate by going to a post...I would think that could only happen if there was an attempt to have you re-directed to an outside internet site that had a miss-matched CA...hmmm.

Re: Certificate error

There was an image tag incorrectly referencing an image via an https: URL.

The tag has been fixed, and all is well.

The thread has been re-opened.

Re: Certificate error

FYI those "certificate errors" aren't generally a problem in and of themselves. It's basically a messages saying that your browser cannot confirm that the site you're dealing with is who it purports to be. That's really not much of an issue if you're just browsing or reading. It's designed to warn you not to enter sensitive information (credit card, SSN, etc) when the certificate isn't valid. This prevents me from, say, starting a website called "ebaay.com", making it look just like ebay, and recording credit card numbers.

Generally, if you get that message, you're cool to accept the certificate as long as you don't plan to type anything important in the browser window, though, if you're paranoid, it might be safer to avoid it. The long and short of it is that no posters here were in any sort of personal computing danger from viewing that page or USPO in general.
