The ignore feature

I wonder if it's possible to turn off the ignore feature for those individuals who refuse to contribute to the forum. It seems that, like searching, it's a premiere service and as such should be part of the membership package, and not available to everyone.

I like that idea!

Re: The ignore feature

Everyone should have the ability to place people on their ignore list. The forum does have a global ignore option where we can place a member on global ignore and then no one but mods and that member can see the posts and the member has no idea that the rest of the board can't see thier posts - although they usually figure it out when everyone suddenly stops responding to anything they have to say. I would love to have the ability to place people on GI, however, Marc is the only person with that ability.

For those who don't know, go to the profile of the person you wish to ignore and click "Add [insert name] to your ignore list" and it's done.

Re: The ignore feature

Just out of curiosity, Crystal, why do you think every member should be able to put others on ignore?

Every member should have the right to ignore those they don't particularly care for - for what ever reason they don't care for them.

Why should people not have the option to ignore you or anyone else?

Re: The ignore feature

Well, it's not that people shouldn't have the option to ignore me. I'm sure that a lot of people do. It's more a thought of mine that if you want to come here and use the board as a one-way means of communication (which is exactly what ignoring other members creates), you should have to contribute in some other fashion. Purchasing a membership is one way to reimburse Marc for providing a platform upon which you can spout your message.

Re: The ignore feature

What is funny is that I cannot see the thread opening post as the OP has been on MY ignore list for ages.

I wanted to ignore a few people sometimes but i managed to resist. I decided to just read everything even if I dont think it makes sense.

pram I have a lot of people on ignore simply because they don't contribute to discussions, their intent appears to be to insult others who don't see the world the way they do, and they use offensive language.

Not all of these people are on the opposite end of the political spectrum from myself - and there are many people whose view is vastly different from mine who I do enjoy engaging with. I can learn from these people.

But I can't learn a lot from people being rude and insulting. I already know that that just gets people's backs up and makes disagreements escalate. And I already know why people behave like that. What else is there to learn from such behaviour?

Re: The ignore feature

Since I just became a paying member , I agree with Pram and those who seconded him. (I still would have agreed if I wasn't paying.)

My personal take on ignoring someone is I won't do it - let me qualify that, I haven't been tempted to use the function yet. I learn much from the rudeness and tangents others use. Like the Godfather - Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.

The beauty of discussions and arguments in forums is that you get the time to set aside your emotions, take a deep breath - lots and lots and LOTS of deep breaths - and respond as reasonably as you can.

So, yeah, I agree. If your skin is too thin to take it, then pay extra so you can ignore it...or chose not to participate. The ignore feature makes it easy for the thin-skinned to continue their spam, rants, propaganda, or whatever without having to be challenged by those they ignore.

Re: The ignore feature

ROFL. It has nothing to do with thin skin. It is about passing up the spam. Spam is bad enough, but when it is completely insane diatribe and pieces of an inner and broken manifesto....manifesting itself on a message board....

Nah. I love it when I open a thread and see where one of them, the op included, posts 4,5-7 times in a row without anyone having made a comment in-between. Makes me all happy I don't have to see the spam.

Its all about BAD spam.

I understand what you're saying. I just think that in order to be able to use the filter, one should have to contribute financially.

I wish someone would quote this so he/she could see it. I challenge this individual to show me ANY time that I have made 7 posts in a row.

The only exception I could see is if I were responding to different individuals (and quoting them). I find the multiquote feature creating posts that are difficult to read.

And, of course, what's really funny is that he/she has had to come in here twice to tell me that he/she has me blocked, as if I'll care.

A favor in kind.
